Casing with 75% colonized jars
    #3320465 - 11/04/04 05:35 PM (13 years, 22 days ago)

If I do all of my work in a glovebox, including casing the grain, is it okay to case with almost colonized jars?

its still going to have to colonize all the substrate so why remove it from the jars before its ready. I dont believe this will get get you mushies faster. Be patient and let your jars fully colonize at least a couple days past full surface covering with mycelium.

I'm using wbs. Does that make a difference? Its pretty shakeable. I thought it would save me some time that way.

Mine are colonizing pretty slow. In the end of the second week and only 75%. I'm doing eq, tub in tub, 84?, fanned once or twice a day. I've got about ten jars in a 2' x 1.5' x 1.5' tub. I think I might not be fanning often enough.

Doesn't the mycelium need to breath?

yes. it has plenty of oxygen to breath inside the incubator. You only need to fan when it is in the fruiting chamber. the O2 exchange is a trigging pinner.

Didn't know that. An I suppose the light doesn't help it much either. Think I should just keep it shut the whole time? Io wonder why my jars are going so slow then. The grain isn't too wet or too dry, and enough of the filter is showing for good air exchange.

I think I'll do it that way next time. Now, do you think its my opening the incubator twice a day and letting fresh air and light in, thats causing the slow growth?

no but it's sure not helping. How slow exactly is it? How many days has it been to get 75% done? Did you use a spore syringe to inoculate?

start a game of hide and go seek with them and count to 3 days. If they're colonized after that, wait another day or two and go.

Used liquid mycelium inoculation. I think I'm on the 12 day or so. Half are at 75%-90% colonized, the others are about 50%-75% colonized. I think the slower ones came out of an older karo jar though.
