Honoring Veterans? No one died for me!
    #3320435 - 11/04/04 05:27 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Oh shit! The ultimate sacriledge! But there goes:

I'm sorry, but no US soldier ever said, "I will die for Swami." People fought for many personal reasons. Some because of social upbrining, some as an occupation, some because of peer pressure, but not one for me, so why should I be grateful?

If our founding fathers had not fought, would it have been so terrible that we were English? Fish and chips are OK and the Beatles were pretty cool.

Should I be grateful that the US Calvary wiped out large numbers of Native Americans?

A few hundred thousand dead Iraqis certainly has not made my life even one iota better nor did the million dead Vietnamese.

(Note to respondents: Please insert standard Hitler question here.)

Your response was quite violent. Maybe I should be grateful for that...

Are there any non-emotional respondents that can point out a logical flaw in my viewpoint?

It's kind of like the phrase, "Support your troops." It seems popular to say that phrase even if you do not support the war. And when I tell people, "How can I support the troops if I do not support what they are doing?" they get all PC-pissy with me.

Seriously, I hope the troops all come home alive and in one piece. I would never want any of them to perish in Iraq. But if I do not support what they are doing, how can I say, "I support the troops," and WHY SHOULD I say it just because it's a popular, off-the-cuff phrase that has lost it's true meaning only because the masses think it's a nifty thing to say about troops?

I've noticed that people who cling to political correctiveness really irritate me lately.

Exactly. I support them being alive, not rotting in the ground causing untold grief to their families.

u could think of it like;
veterans are, in their minds, trying to make the world better for everyone.
u are everyone.
without supporting the ways in which they act, you can still be gratefull for the effort.

u could also think of it like;
everyone has good intentions, no one is intentionally tryin to hurt anything.
thus intentions are meaningless because they are absolute. further, it is the actions that matter since the intent is unquestionable.

you can appreciate intent, while at the same time, scorn the actions that came out of the intent.

i tend to lean to the latter.

Many people are "black mailed" into taking jobs they would rather not. Just because someone has the choice of working in burger king or being homeless, does that mean I should honour them?

You find it hard to get a job? Big whoop, so do most people, but the majority of people even in economically deprived areas do not join the army.

Hitler thought he was making the world a better place for the German people. Extremist muslim terrorists believe they are carrying out God's holy work. Intentions are not justification for acts that are morally unjust.

We live in a country that is addicted to war. I have not made the choice to be born here but, this is my home.

I support my country even when I feel we are wrong. Same as when I support my kid when she screws up very bad.

There is logic in Honoring Vets But, you don't seem to get it.

Honor is a spawn of commitment.

Without our troops dieing you would be very different. It is because of their sacrifice that you can set behind your computer and spew.

My family lost a huge chunk during WW2 and in my family we honor the war dead. You are from a wonder bread family I would guess

I served my country, but I am glad I am still alive, Had I been mortally wounded, I would not have been thinking as I drew my last breath, "I do this for the Fucknuckles of the world." It would be more like, "Ohhhhhhh shhhhitttttttt!"

Yes, but that does mean that those who do join chose to do so.

LOL

I understand where your coming from

I also served and I just missed the gulf war by a few weeks. I was scared.

But it still doesn't change the fact that our war dead should be honored and respected

Which it would seem you are not going to do

That's ok, just don't piss on anybodys grave

There is a huge difference between honouring veterans from a war that was fought to protect America and honouring veterans who join up because the pay is good and the don't mind shooting people with different coloured skin, funny eyes or towels on their heads.

It would be you out there, getting your head blown off. You better honor them even if they just went their to kill mother fuckers. If they weren't there, you would take their spot by being drafted. Be happy that you can sit in front of your computer, jerking off, eating burgers, and smoking weed.

I cannot make such a distinction between one dead soldier and another

And I will not presume that I can.

Can you?

And individual solders are not the Army

i) If people weren't so eager to join the military of their own free will, the American government would never commit to a war so lightly, so drafting would not occur.

ii) I would like to think that truly moral people would refuse to be drafted in a war they didn't believe in and would rather go to jail.
