What aspects of a water isolation tank make it so amazing?
    #3317762 - 11/03/04 10:57 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I'm just curious as to the specific qualities that make it work so well. Is it the weightlessness? Or is it the decreased ability to hear? Or what..I don't see how it's that much different from just sitting quietly.

dude all of your senses are allowed to run wild because they are recieving almost no data whatsoever.

From what I've heard your brain starts trying to build stuff out of the nothing and you can experience some pretty weird shit

Dark silence can get REALLY LOUD and REALLY BRIGHT if you do it well

All of the above. Your physical senses are reduced to the lowest possible level of input. Also the temperature of the water (composed of a water + magnesium sulfate salt solution) is equal to the temperature of the surface of your skin. So after a while in the tank you lose your awareness of the boundaries of your body. That combined with the total support and experience of weightlessness the bouyant salt water mix provides allows you to leave your body behind if you so choose.

Qualitatively it is light years removed from sitting quietly. It is said to be the most relaxing environment available on this planet. Ninety percent of the activity of our brains is said to be taken up by processing information between the body and mind. Floating removes the need for most of the energy required for running the body and frees it up to be redeployed in service of the mind and spirit.

It's exactly like being a battery in The Matrix.  Just sit back on your pillow for awhile in the dark.  Then factor that up.

When I was 16 my oldest uncle built a isolation tank in his basement. This guy was straight from 1967. Total hippie but, with a Phd.

I was lucky enough to experience this first hand. Down goes 300 mics of LSD and into the tank. I lasted mabey an hour before I freaked out. He almost didn't let me out but I really freaked. The only thing I can tell you is it was scary. I was gone into another world/body/mind and unless I reached down to feel the bottom of the tank I was just fucking scared. He says I never let things happen. er......... never let things happen?? WTF dude everything was happining.

ME I would never do it again. But I seen several other people come out of there very happy.

First and only.

I have been a hard core tripper since then. But I can truly say with the greatest or ease. That experience was by far my worst.
After thinking since my last post
I do think, if I could do this today. I would get much more pleasure and postive experiences from it. I have grown very far in my tripping lessons. Today I am a different High on :smirk:

But the tank has been gone for years

I would love one of these.

I've been thinking about building one for a while, as they cost like $4000 to buy :/

WHY that much??

I am pretty sure my uncle built his pretty cheap

It was made from plywood and a rubber liner

And if I remember right he just used sea salt.

And for a heater the water he used a hot water tank element

I know the water is suppose to have certian chems but he winged it

I would be willing to bet one could be built for under 500 bucks.

It may not be perfect but close

Yeah it's because they are professionally molded and whatnot, some with built-in CD players even, and all with filters and heavy doors and other unnecessary 'thrills'.

I bet someone could build one for under $100 even - but it may not be pretty

I'm planning on pretty much the same method as your uncle used - a wood frame with a liner, that is if I ever get around to building one

Yes, I'd say you were a little young to be going through something that intense. It's usually best before you trip and do something to experience that something first without tripping so you can get a baseline. Your uncle sounds like quite a character. And that was the heyday of the sixties so it probably seemed quite normal to him at the time.

I have read a number of reports of people floating while tripping and the experiences are usually good, but can get scary at times. As far as people floating while sober I've yet to hear one negative experience and I've read hundreds of reports.

You can indeed build a tank yourself. Here is a site that offers plans to build one for under 1,000 [Canadian] dollars:

I had my first experience at the tender age of 14. By the time I was 16 I had been around the block

But I never had been exposed to a high dose of pure Ann Arbor acid

Man I miss the old hook ups

I think if you had just tried the tank alone, without the LSD, you would have had a much less frightening experience...

Nah I don't think so. And it not because I don't feel what your saying

But the type of journey your speaking of, I prefer going on long fasts and isolation for a week or longer.

I find an empty body is a much better for exploration of the deep mind then the body exposed to something foreign

The tank was just for the pure LSD experience. Nothing more.

I have and it's one of my favorite movies. The special effects were good (for its time), and the acting and dialogue is excellant.

Of course it was spiced up for Hollywood. Dr. Lily didn't really emerge from the tank as a prehistoric human and kill a deer at the zoo.

as far as i understand it the loss of sensation decreases brain activity, the major one being the relative weightlesness that you experience, as countering the constant effects of gravity is what demands the most brain power of all your activities. so you would noy get the same effect just laying in a dark soundproof room.

I would love to hop into an isolation tank for awhile. I would use it alot before triping in it though. To get used to it. I remember seeing the one from the movie your talking about "Altered States". That movie was fucking crazy.

Oh man..that sounds like something that really sounds worthwhile. I would think that a good isolation experience could be untolds more powerful than just psychedelics alone. And it wouldn't be a "drug experience" so it would probably be easier to talk to people about your thoughts, or to accept them yourself.

I saw the box for altered states at my local blockbuster. The title and cover caught my interest but i figured it was a crappy low budget movie. Maybe I'll reconsider, is it worth watching?

Here is a link for anyone interested in locations of sensory deprivation chambers in the us: http://www.floatation.com/wheredetails_usa.html#USA

There are locations for canada and other countries too but you will need to browse around a little.
