Magnesium, dolomite lime and casings.. a definitive answer needed.
    #3319117 - 11/04/04 11:34 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, well.. my first 60/40 casings were a success, but of course I'm always looking for ways to make our mycelial friends happier. I didn't use any pH buffer, and I want to try it out.

The pH of coir is roughly 5.2 - 6.8. That is a bit below the optimal range of ~7.5.

I know about using hydrated lime, but I don't have any, and I'm a use-what-I-have kind of guy. So I want to use this lime flour I have. But I have read concerns about the magnesium content of some hydrated limes, and have gotten confused. Is the magnesium in hydrated lime available elemental magnesium, is that why it is bad?

Is it Ok to use dolomite lime with a high magnesium carbonate content? My lime's analysis is;

Calcium carbonate(CaCO3) = 50%
Elemental Calcium(Ca) = 22%
Magnesium carbonate(MgCO3) = 40%

As far as I knew, carbonates are quite locked up and shouldn't be readily available to most organisms.

So.. who can set me straight on this whole magnesium thing?

Why don't you use some egg shells and not worry about it?

I could do that, but then I wouldn't have gained any knowledge. :wink:

well kramer is no Anno or Hypae but as he understands it the dolo lime takes longer to release the buffers(kinda like the cos)or "dissolve" so in using it you would have to use a lot to notice a change( no point in fucking with it if you don't have a pH tester and are "eyeballing" it,well a little will never hurt!) and then as it dissolves over the next couple weeks it will send the pH though the ceiling
take this with a grain of salt as we like to get high around here a lot more than we like to study :wink:
when kramer uses the dolo lime he likes to let the casing material sit around a couple weeks after he mixes and moistens before he uses it!:thumbup:

What's the analysis of kramer's lime, if you know?

I suppose I'll go ahead and give it a try on a couple of casings.
