Negatory on the Copes, for several reasons.
1. You're too far north. They rarely grow North of around Valdosta, GA.
2. They grow in cow dung.
3. They didn't bruise blue :smirk:

As to what they are, I have an idea but need to know:
1. Texture of the cap
2. Any type of veil remnants?
3. Does it turn into black goo after a while?

the cap's slimey, like fresh cubes.
the yard is fertlized with manure every two or three years.
i've also heard that copes don't bruise as often as some people say.. but that was just speculation when i read it.

they don't really turn into goo after a while, just shrivel up.

alright, update. i found a few more specimens growing from the same spot...

the gills seem to change color as the mushroom grows. immature mushrooms have a light grey gill color... the cap color is a lot lighter, a light tan fading to white then a very light grey at the edges... best i can do.

oh, and so the spelling nazi's don't come knocking, it's spelled fertilized.

Well, Copes' full scientific name is Copelandia cyanescens.

Cyanescens is latin for "becoming blue."

So yes, all copelanda do bruise blue. There are some active Pans that will not stain blue.

Not around the inland areas of southeast. The Appalachian Mountians mess everything up. Higher elevation = lower temps = no copes.

any idea on the ID gumby?

i guess it was panaeolus that i was thinking of not bruising instead of copes. my fault... or blame it on my friend Bud.

i live in a valley a bit north of chattanooga, so i think the ridges/tall hills/mountains all around don't help my spore count that much when it comes to anything besides cubes (been found within walking distance of my house). downtown chattanooga is a different story though, weilii have been found there.

i have a spot i need to check on today that's the perfect weilii habitat downtown.

If you find weilii in TN you gotta find us some way to get pics. There has only been one report on the shroomery of them growing up near Chattanooga, and that was a few years ago. It'd be cool if we could say they grow there, but there just hasn't been much evidence of them thus far.

As far as the mushroom you found goes, it's hard to say. It's a toss up between Panaeolus, Panaeolina, and Coprinus. The only way I could nail the genus is with a picture. I've been picking pans for years and I've never seen them with an umbo. Most pans have very campanulate caps when young and they flatten out to planar or sometimes wavy when they become mature.

Forgive me if some of my terminology is off.. I've had about.. 3 hours of sleep in the past 48 hours

alright. i'm going to sort through pictures under those genus and see if i can nail down a species. i looked through panaeolus and coprinus earlier on mycokey.com (those were my results) and didn't have much luck..

as for the weilii, i didn't get to go downtown today, i'm without a car at the moment. i know of 3 or 4 spots where they would be perfect... pine trees, 1-3 year old bermuda... i've been reading up pretty heavily on weilii because i'd really love to find some. i've bought myself a field guide and think i'm going to start pursuing this hobby alot more in the spring.

guess i have to stick to cultivation.

alright. i think i found the closest thing to it. It's an inky cap, Coprinus atramentarius.

Picture and description:
http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Coprinus_atramentarius.html

pretty cool back yard find, if i do say so myself... this patch just keeps producing mushrooms with all the rainfall we were getting recently...

The shape of the caps was alot different in those. There was no pink to the gill color at all in young specimens. the cap was about that color, except it was a light brown at the top and there was a slight nipple to it. I think the brown color of the stem was from dirt staining it, though.

ok, here you go, the caps were more like this picture:
http://www.mycokey.com/MycoWeb.acgi$showspecies?genus=Coprinus&nummer=1

thanks for the time you put into this Gumby, especially with all that schoolwork and such.

Agaricus are fairly common mushrooms after rain. If you don't get to them soon enough, you'll find a stem with bits of rotten goo hanging off the top.

Just for the hell of it, here's some pics of Coprinus that I've found in my back yard:

And the goo stage (nasty, eh?):
