Cubensis problem (urgent)
    #3318625 - 11/04/04 06:42 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I purchased my first cubensis grow box some weeks ago but received some contradictory advice from the retailer and the instructions on the grow bag. The advice from the retailer was to wait five weeks from hydration (of the bag), however the instructions state 10 days and to harvest before the veil breaks. My mushrooms are now large and mainly black capped. However having read the instructions again it seems that I should have allowed greater oxygenation after ten days, I therefore assume that the blackened caps indicate lack of oxygen. I have now opened the bag, will the caps oxygenate and dry? When should one harvest them? Will somebody please give me the correct advice? Thanks!

caps turning black is a sign of sporation. It means it's making spores. That specific mushroom is ready for harvest. As far as instruction from the vendors and such... sorry.. I'm just not informed about kits that well...

As far as oxygenation... fresh air is good for mycelium. But the bags should've had some sort of filter to allow air exchange... again, I don't know what your instructions says, but opening the bag means more fresh air(which is good) but at the same time you'll have to worry about contaminations as well.

Don't worry about the blackening cap after the veil breaks. Spore distribution is exactly why mycelium makes mushrooms.

Thanks Sam , there was a microporous filter on the bag. They do seem very black though (with small gold/yellow patches), will they dry O.K? Oh yeah and what's the dose ?!

I'm really sorry... Kits aren't something I deal with... And I'm more adept with jars and can't really give you sound advice. I can only tell you about mushies, basically, since you are using a kit.

Spore are edible. They don't do anything bad or good. You don't have to worry about the spores drying or stuff. Mushroom should be fine to eat dried or fresh. Just remember that dry weight is 10% of wet weight. Normal dose is something that depends on what you like and how it works for you. Most people find 2-3.5 grams dry to be nice but hard enough trip. 5g dry is a asking for mind meld and 7g dry is lala land. But again, people react differently... You might be in lala land with just 1g.

If you don't have a gram scale, you should get one. Really, it's cheap and much more enjoyable at the dose you expected. If you really can't afford one, US penny minted after 1982 weighs 2.5g.

Good luck

Sam

Well to start off, the cap doesnt turn black from it just producing spores. When you see a cap that has a alot of black on it, the black parts are spores themselves ebing dropped onto the cap from a taller mushroom. The cap does not turn black just because it is producing spores. I suggest you do some more research on cultivation and the details of how they grow and when to harvest. Alot of people harvest them before the veil breaks, but if you are going to take spore prints you have to wait until after the veil breaks so that they are ata a stage where they will produce spores. Like Sam i have not used any kits to do a grow. I find it much cheaper and more interesting to do it from scratch. You can grow in growbags and go through a whole cycle without opening it and not have any problems. Its alot like an invitro tek. So the black on your caps is more than likely spores from mushrooms higher up that are realeasing spores. No it was not necessary to give them greater air exchange, although it couldn't hurt. You should think about doing some jar grows. They really aren't as hard as some people make them out to be. Also just hanging out in this forum and reading other peoples questions and the awnsers to them will help you greatly. Good Luck.

dropped spores go down. Before the spores are dropped, they are in the gill and give the caps dark color between the gills. And yes, they do make the cap black, because they do migrate some and some dropped spores move with air to build on top of the cap.

You don't need to have a taller mushroom to have spores on top of the cap.

You clean your hands with anti-bacterial really well, including under your nails.  Then you open the bag, reach in there and pull it out while slightly twisting it.  Then you close the bag back up.

Have fun!

good call sam. i was about to make the same comment, considering i've had spores cover the tops of mushrooms taller than the rest of the group. somehow they make it on top of the cap. if it's just spores, you should be able to wipe them off with your finger to check (while fresh), but they won't hurt anything.

Kramer forgot about clusters.  Can't always harvest when veil breaks on a shroom.

He said when or before..most dont let the cap open. Its funny people know two different kinds of mushrooms around here. "Open caps" and "Closed caps". They say for closed cap shrooms take a gram to equal 3 of open capped. Bunch of BS if you ask me. I let them open all the way up. I try and get them before spores drop but it has never been a problem if they do (they do often). Just the caps dont look quite as pretty black as golden when dried.

But thats not what i was saying, they do not change the pigment of the the mushroom cap itself. Sure their are minute air currents of warm air rising and falling which can deposit onto the tops of your caps. But caps actually get lighter with spore production. And yes between the gills it will get darker but that is because of spores being produced in the those areas and the spores give the appearance of a color change.
