Help Please!!!
    #331792 - 06/01/01 07:04 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

My friend of three years recently became a mushroom hunter. Just yesterday he picked and ate a few of what he thought where blue foots. He said he identifed them using the bluing method, however the poor boy is color blind and he is uncertin that they bruised blue after all. Basically all I'm asking do any posinous shroom change colors after handling and demsonstrate this brusing effect.

their are bluing bollettes that are poisonous, but they have a spongy pore-surface instead of gills, they are probably the most heavily blueing of any mushroom. but can kill ya.
the delicious milk-cup mushroom (or is it cap??) bruises blue but is not psychoactive.
their are some purple-bruising woodland mushrooms that arent psychoactive, tho i dont know their potency. there is a poisonous inocybe called the "red-staining inocybe"
and many mushrooms turn brown where damaged due to miosture relesed from tissue. nobody colorblind should ever say they see blue!
certain deadly conocybes and galerinas resemble certain psilocybes known as "blue foots" or "blue legs" and are commonly mistaken leading to death.
youre friend better find those mushrooms he took, and get them ID'd if he wants to live. quite frankly im willing to weiger it WASNT a psilocybe as youre friend doesnt really seem to know what he is doing. theres more to ID than bluing.
scan them and post them. NOW! theres no time to waste, and im not fucking you around for fun.

HI, I would like to bring up the subject of the name blue legs or blue-footed Psilocybe.

In the 1970's Psilocybe stuntzii, named in honor of Dr. Daniel Stuntzz of the University of Washington, was unnamed until Ott and Guzman named it in his honor.

In 1973 and 1974, no one knew the name and Dr. stuntz himself identified seeral specimens for me as Psilocybe cyanescens. An error which i included in the original deition of Magic Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest.

Just a small error but I published a picture of P. stuntzii as P. cyanescens and list ed the dosage for P. stuntzii at 20 to 40 mushrooms.

However no one woulcd want to eat 20 to 40 P. cyanescens except maybe 21pounds ofshrooms.

Now at that same time more than a dozen books appeared ont he market on magic mushroom identification.

Dr. Andrew Weil wrote int he Harvard Botanical Museum Leaflets, an ethnopharmacological report ont he use of Magic Mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest. In his article in the Harvard Botanical Museum Leaflets, Dr. Weil referred to the Psilocybe stuntzii as P. cyanescens, carrying a misidentification onto his name and he referred to them as Washington Blue Veils.

A name never recognized by anyone else except a feww mentions over the years.

In 1979 I attended a Myco Media conference on Orcas Island and I met Dr. Gary Lincoff, editor of botht the Simon and Schulster mushroom guide and the Audubo9n Mushroom Field Guide.

In the Audubon Guided Dr. Lincoff gave the P. stuntzii's the epithet of Blue legs or something to that effect.

When I mentioned to Dr. Lincoff that everyone in the Pugot Sound Regioon referred to thge P. stuntzii's as "blue Ringers," he was totaly unaware of the nick name. I asked him where he got the name blue foot or blue legs and he replied forthat he named it such as "for lack of something better."
