adding water to a colonizing jar
    #3317252 - 11/03/04 11:20 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

so i read all this great stuff about tyvek and i used it on a bunch of quart jars. then i read all this bad stuff about tyvek and how the jars tend to dry out. my jars aren't a week old yet, but they're starting to colonize. i just put foil on them tonight to help stop the water loss. i was wondering if i'd be crazy to add a few cc's of sterile water with a syringe?

Unless the subsrtaight is shrinking I would not do anything

And I use tyvek and nothing else. I yet to have any drying out problems.

i should have mentioned they are popcorn jars. i wouldn't notice if they were shrinking i don't think. i'll probably just chill and let them colonize.

If you think tyvek is drying your jars out to fast cut the surface area down by putting some tape on the tyvek. This will slow the exchange rate.I've only done wbs in wide mouth jars and never had to do this, should work.GL

Dont even worry about it. The stuff you heard about them drying otu was from people only using one peice of the two peice ring which can sometimes if not done right cause them to dry out. If you use the lid, tyvek and ring then you shouldnt have any problems with them drying out. They'll colonize..dont sweat it.
