Soak and wait
    #3315907 - 11/03/04 04:37 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Due to roommates not knowing how to clean I am now needing to soak larger amounts of WBS at once, instead of spreading the process out over time. After the 12-16 hour soak is done and the grains are washed and strained, how long can they sit? If I was to leave them in a container for say a week would what water is still left in them after draining cause problems or growth in the grain? During that week they would still be draining also. (IE the container has tons of large holes in it covered with a screen and the container is raised up above another container)

Any help would be great. Stopping them from messing up the kitchen during a simmer and PC is hard enough, but stopping them from making a mess during soaking also just can't seem to be done.

Not long. Up to a day. After that time they will start to contaminate and disintegrate.

I wouldn't even let them sit for a full day..I've had them germinate after doing that. It works better if you don't strain them first and leave them soaked in water for the 48 hours. Even thats not so good and you have to make sure they stay covered completly..they'll soak alot of it up over 48 hours. Seemed to keep them so drowned they couldnt germinate.

You can also simmer it which should kill the grain and stop it from germinating. I've left it to sit for 2 days after simmering and it was ok. Way to wet but with a good strain and towel dry it worked out.
