Do those exit polls include the votes from all of election day, or are they mostly just the earlier exit polls?
Also, there are several other factors that could lead to this unexpected result. One: the exit polls could have been conducted with bias. Two: the exit polls could have been fucked up over all (for unkown reasons), except for the 8 states that you showed. Three: voting peculiarities in individual states could have led to different types of data. For instance, the states that counted mostly early votes would lean toward kerry, and toward bush if all were counted.

Police state: The US spends more money on law enforcement than on education. An individual's sentence can be lowered if, after they are arrested, they actively sell drugs to another individual in a sting operation (recruiting prisoners). Tulia texas race scandal: a cop can get away with arresting blacks without ANY evidence. Despite this, the individual who made these arrests was named cop of the year in texas in 1999, and most of his higher-ups got promotions. The Patriot Act allows law enforcement to peruse your internet records, library records, banking records. The government can send law enforcement officers into activist groups to pose as a member, spy, and attempt to set up the group. The police can raid your house and seize your property without any justification or notification. Teh FBI can show up at your door if someone reports anti-political sentiment, and then they can arrest you without evidence if it looks like nobody has your back. The government has detained over 1,000 supposed domestic terrorists indefinitely without any evidence as to their actions (the gov made Jose Padilla a posterchild for the success for the domestic war on terror, then admitted that they hadn't had any real evidence against him or even a named crime). The government has held prisoners from abroad in Gitmo without trial or evidence, all in the name of terror.
So, maybe it only seems like a poice state if you're black or brown, but that's enough for me. Oh yeah, and there was an earlier post where someone searching for mushrooms was stopped by a cop who told him that they had been getting info from a mushroom related website. Are they reading this?

Now look at the states that were in play where there was NO paper trail. They ALL had Bush doing MUCH better than the Exit polls indicated.
are the states listed under this the only states to use electronic ballots?
i live in PA and i punched holes in a paper ballot. there was a paper trail.
what about the other states where there was a paper trail?
only 8 are listed. i'm guessing that they are the 8 which best support the point the author is trying to make. what about the others?
