background processes
    #3316659 - 11/03/04 09:34 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

My computer's a little on the sluggish side sometimes since I upgraded from Win98 to WinXP a few weeks ago.
When I used to look at this window in Windows 98 it would only list two things: explorer.exe and system. So now there's 21 processes and I don't know if that's normal or not but I'm wondering if I can eliminate some of them if it will help my old computer run smoother. What does the "commit charge" ratio mean? How come there are five SVCHOST.exes? I think all the ones that begin with "Mc" are involved by Mcafee virus scan.
Any help's appreciated.

Don't worry about SVCHOST, as it runs a variety of services that are essential to XP. I suggest checking out Black Viper.com for some helpful information and tweaking tips for XP. Hope that helps!

You may want to kill LSAS especially. The svchosts are normal services afaik. Sometimes other programs may disguise themselves as svchosts but that's another story.

You can pretty much kill the windows services, just make sure you don't disable anything important.

yeah, go to blackviper & go through the list and see what you want to disable.

also check out: http://answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
that'll tell you want what most processes are...

blackviper should do you good - use the "safe" service configuration, but if you want to speed things up further read each entry & see if you need it or not. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

also check out the strang services section: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/strangeservice.htm
