pasteurizing straw?
    #3312222 - 11/02/04 11:37 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

i've read about the ways of pasteurizing straw by turning up your water heater.. but,

would a large pyrex dish filled with water/straw baked in an oven at 180? for a certain length of time be adequate to do it? forgive me if that seems stupid, i've really never attempted to pasteurize anything before.

TD has done it in an oven by soaking straw for 24hrs, straining and rinsing very well and putting in a turkey tin covered tightly with heavy duty foil. Preheat to 185f and cook for 2 1/2 hrs.

He is no bulk expert but it seems to have worked so far.

The best thing about using oven bags is that you lose minimal moisture during the pastuerization process. You can then just dump your grains directly into the bag and mix it up. Then dump the bag into your bin. It minimizes exposure to open air, which is what you want.

So I should just get an oven bag and soak the straw overnight, strain it, and then bake it in the bag (without adding anymore water) at 170? for a couple of hours?

idoitek

You are correct. I'd drain it for a couple of hours....You should be able to squeeze a handful of the straw as hard as you can and only about 1 drop of water should come out. Any more water than that and your inviting contams.

Since we're on the subject, and the dude wasted some extra money on getting filter bags over the net, how would one apply a filter patch to these oven bags you can get in the grocery store?

I bought the biggest pot they had at walmart (its huge) for like 10-20$ and filled it about halfway with water and heated it to 175. i put a bunch of chopped up straw in a pillow case and left it in (under the water, this was the tricky part) there for about 1.5-2 hours. let it cool off for an hour and spawned it.

it grew very fucking fast. 4x30x20 inches nearly 100% colonized in under a week

I was under the impression that it must be heated while being soaked in the water, and THEN strained..?

that is right, once you're done heating it (pastuerizing) you throw it on an oven rack that sits above the sink for a couple hours while it cools and drains. After a few hours when it's cool it should be the appropriate water content.

i spawned 4 semi filled quart jars to the tub (probably about 3 quarts of rye).

Its a high ratio I know, but it was worth it... it colonized perfectly and pinned even better.  But then some problems started.  Not all of the pins started growing.. in fact, most of them didnt.  Also, the pins and mushrooms started having mycelium form all over them.  Everything had a white fur coat.  I attribute it to the humidity being too high, but I was not misting at all, there was no condensation on the walls, and i was fanning 4+ times a day which isn't much but i thought it would be enough.

My next grow I will be setting up a better air circulation system.

this was also my first grow so i wasn't that prepared for problems... i know i know i should have done PF tek, but I like to learn by starting in the deep end.  and the only thing im really out is 4$ worth of rye and some straw.  I only got about an ounce from the tub so far.  If all the pins that formed would have grown, I could easily estimate at least 4 ounces on that first flush... :frown: oh well, next time.
