casing colonization
    #3309355 - 11/02/04 01:39 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

made my casing friday evening, and 4 days later, i see no signs of colonization so far....i know patience is the key, but could it be that my casing layer is to thick. or could the substrate or casing have too much H20. thanks!

How thick is your substrate layer?

How thick is your casing layer?

How wet did the top of your casing layer look after you misted it? Was it soaked or just glistening?

It's probably fine and just needs to sit longer, but the information above will definately help out.

yeah i only case with a layer no more than 1 inch and a substrate layer of 2 inches so yes if you have a thick casing layer tahan it will take longer to see mycelium popping through also do you still have it at incubbation temps cause i keep it at those temps until i see mycelium popping through cause those are optimum for myc growth

good luck hope this helped

that's a thick casing for that much substrate. the general rule of thumb is 1/4th of the substrate depth. give it some more time. i just did my first casings and had myc popping up in two days. the aggressive ones will get right up there then slowly but surely the rest will catch up. if you don't see something in a week, then i'd get worried. also, you're incubating it right? around 85F?

I have 5 casings right now, 3 are WBS and 2 are from PF cakes. The WBS casings shot off real fast and they're doing awesome now. The myc has barely popped through in a few places on the 2 PF casings. Just give it some more time and it'll happen.

yeah mine were a little slow going too, took like a week. But in the end I had a great casing. Patience is definately key.

i didn't mist, the substrate and casing were both a little damp. a little water dribble out as i squeezed the casing layer...should i take some of the casing layer off?

i took it out today and there was a few little spots where the myc was popping up! it pulled away a little from the side so i redistributed a little casing mix since i don't have any extra and the top looks like casing again. i also misted a little bit...it's been cased since friday. anything else i should look out for?
thanks a alot !

I consider 5/8" casing layer thick and 1" really not necessary IMHO unless doing large tray and deep substrates.
