Ive found them growing in the woods. Alot of amanitas grow on lawns, but Ive never seen muscaria on lawns(not to say that they dont). Have you read any trip reports on muscaria? There not like weilii. From what Ive read its more of a sickening, disoriented trip than a dreamy, peacefull feeling that you get from weilii. If you find any try smoking the skins of the cap instead of ingesting them. This is suppose to be a much more pleasent high.

Aminitas are mycorrhizal partners with trees. They fruit within close proximity to trees, they can appear in lawns usually close to trees. I find that they seem to prefer conifers.

Amanita Muscaria prefer pine trees to grow under. As Eris said, they are mychorrhizal with trees. Try looking under and near pine trees in grass, mulch, basically anywhere! Also look where pine needles lay.
No Lemurian, Amanita Muscaria are not poisonous, although the family of Amanita fungi do contain some deadly mushrooms containing amanitoxins (which are highly poisonous).
If you are interested, visit www.erowid.org and take a look in their Amanita's vault. It is very interesting and an excellent source of information.

quite interesting indeed is erowid.org interesting enough to tell me that no drying Amanitas before eating will make you quite sick to the stomach (something about ibotenic acid doesnt sound inviting0 so yeah actually they are semi poisonous but hey tell people to eat them raw and allow them to kick your ass
Erowid suggests drying at temperatures around 170 degrees this converts ibotenic acid into something non harmful but there may still be nausea which is remedied by smoking some MJ
