3rd PARTY NUMBERS
    #3314106 - 11/03/04 10:33 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I've got total votes cast for 3 third party candidates. I wanted to give percentages, but I couldn't find a good source for the total number of votes cast this election.

NOTE: I tallied these myself, by hand, based on cnn.com's state-by-state numbers (except for Badnarik's, I changed his - they're now based on his party's tally). So they might not be 100% accurate. But they should be close.

Heartthrob independent Ralph Nader led, scoring 391,572 votes.

Trendy libertarian Michael Badnarik took a solid 390,200 votes.

And my pick, green David Cobb got owned with only 104,480 votes.

So there you have it.

Sadly, with Bush in office another 4 years to continue being the scapegoat for America's problems, it will take longer to get people to realize the two-party system isn't working.

SS7,

Are these numbers lower than they were in 2000?
I mean, I know Nader's are. But what about libertarian?

what is the solution? If a 3rd party candidate were to ever hold office, it would still be a 2-party system, no? What alternative do you suggest?

If a third-party candidate managed to make it into office, particularly either a Green or Libertarian, it's likely they'd institute reforms on the electoral system.

unfortunately, only if they had the extremely wide support necessary to amend the constitution.

right. but what exactly should we do? instant runoff voting? reforming/modifying the EC via state-law? I think we need to develop a plan - something is fundamentally flawed here.

Shit. Badnarik got ten thousand less votes than the 2000
Libertarian(Browne) got. I was hoping for 500,000 this time around
for the Lib. party.

It didn't help that Badnarik's commercial on Fox News channel was
SOOO bad. It should have been him looking into the camera and
telling people what he wanted to do. Instead there was a husband
and wife team of BAD actors in front of what seemed to be a $150
home video camera reciting stale and uninteresting lines.

Still, I think this was a very good election for libertarians. Their percentage among third party voters skyrocketed. They were on more ballots than any other third party. If Badnarik runs in 2008, he will most likely be the top third party candidate. And, who knows, he may even get to debate with the big boys.

Thanks. Like I said, this was done pretty crudely on the back of a blood drive flyer. I'll change the numbers as they come in.

Without The Shroomery Badnarik would have had fewer votes than Cobb.

That's a fact. Look it up.
