My Biggest Post-Election Concern
    #3314628 - 11/03/04 12:07 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Whitehouse: Republican Controlled
House: Republican Controlled
Senate: Republican Controlled
SCOTUS: Soon to be mostly Republican Appointments*

*We've got one SCJ getting cozy with throat cancer and at least one other expected to retire within the next 4 years. That means cherry-picked and approved Justices from Gee Dubya and Crew. What happened to checks and balances? Oh and Roe v Wade, you can say good-bye to that. The whole federal government has just gotten greased up and is going to roll right over us.

Oh... just roll over onto your belly and relax. The more tense you are, the more it's gonna hurt...

There are problems with the democratic party right now and the true dems really need to fix it for the benefit of all of us.

My sister is in politics and attended the DNC convention. She was called a racist by other black dems there just in passing because she is white. The dems try to incite racism and class-warfare to beat cons when all they really need to do is intelligently debate and work towards just goals.

my biggest concern is also the Supreme Court

I have long believed that the only way to end prohibition would be through the Supreme Court, and now I know that will never happen in my lifetime.

Plus the idea of giving religious fundamentalists that much control over the law really disturbs me. Especially when it comes to scientific ethics.

Exactly. In the next couple years, and every 2 years after that we have the chance to change the House and Senate. In another 4 years we can change the president. The SCOTUS appointments drag on for decades. If you thought those "damned liberal activist judges" were bad, wait until we have the Supreme Conservative Theocratic Activist Judges on the bench.

Sorry, I thought that was on topic... So you're NOT worried about getting ass raped by the Republicans?

Metaphorically, yes. On a general literal basis, no.

We live in times where a movie depicting the torture of Jesus becomes a blockbuster hit.

To quote Robert Novak from last night, "America is a conservative country," like it or not.

And it's the worse off for it. I blame christianity in general and the puritans specifically for getting the ball rolling for the oppressive and repressive religious meme that is plaguing our country.

well the good news is that is without the advancement of science, people will not live as long as possible, therefore supreme court judges will die sooner so we wont have to deal with them longer

but in all seriouness, i am extremely concerened about the supreme court, it doesnt seem right that they should be appointed for life.

Being a scientist and generally liberal on some social issues, im worried about it too. However, you can look at it the other way and wonder what would happen if a bunch of extreme liberals were appointed. I just hope he appoints some moderates.

The good news about the Supreme Court is that the judges who are closest to retirement are some of the most conservative judges on the court, so it will simply be a matter of replacing one conservative judge with another. An interesting thing about the Supreme Court is that presidential nominations often backfire on them. One of the most liberal judges of the 20th Century was appointed by Eisenhower.

The best thing about the election is keeping activist judges off the Supreme Court. Save the Constitution!

Bush doesn't have a very good track record of saving the Constitution.
