    #331395 - 06/01/01 07:02 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

could anyone who cases pls answer the following short questions.
1. when you case, what size/shape is the casing tray?
2. do you use a bottom layer (if so, what and why)
3. how much substrate do you use and do you prepare it? (crumble, slice, etc...)
4. what do you use for a top layer?
5. what do you do for moisture/humidification?

many thanks to all those who answer!!!

I've used many different casing trays from round to square, the shape does not matter, should be at least 2 inches deep though. I normally use Verm for the bottom layer, but am experimenting with coco fiber. Just do not use perlite for the bottom layer, it gets dry to quickly. I use between 1/2 and 1 inch of coco fiber for my top casing layer, which is crumbled.
I use 2 inches of perlite with 1/4-1/2 inch of water for humidity and a bubbler for air exchange, still fanning at least once a day.

Please could you stop the noise I'm trying to get some rest

HeGz has a sound way of doing this. My friend has a very simular way that is much easier. Get yourself a Rubbermaid tub that is at least 8" high. The shape does not matter at all. Place 1/4 to 1/2" moist verm on the bottom. Then put in 2-4" crumbled cakes. Cover with 1/2" coir. Duct tape the tub up to the top of the coir, but leave room for light to come in. This is all you need to do, the coir holds water very well and you will only need to mist when there are no water droplets on the sides of the tub. Good luck.

I use a bin that I found at Lowe's and a try I found at the seed shop. I have to trim down the tray so it fits in the bin. Ccoat is like 10 bucks for the two. I don't know what size maybe 6x12 tray.
2. Bottom layer helps things stay moist with good drainage. I use verm.
3. I use pf style cakes and then slice them up like 1/2 inch thick.
4.50/50+ it takes like 2 minutes to mix up and an hour to pasturize.
5.Perilite at the botton of the bin. I set the tray on top of the perilite.

Someone should email me a bowl.
