You should use a butane lighter and make sure the flame is touching the Salvia. Like those ones... EDIT: Btw, in future you might want to give the Search feature a try.

Yep, they're the most common type of lighter.
The reason you have probably read that you need to use a 'butane' lighter is because Salvinorin-A burns at a high temperature so say a match or a zippo flame for instance wouldn't be sufficient. For the same reason it's also important to ensure the flame is touching the material as you toke.

I have only used plain leaf, and never with a butane lighter. It doesn't seem to require a butane lighter for the plain leaf.

It doesn't require a butane lighter for extract either. It will burn regardless. I don't know if there is a correct way to use Salvia. But this question has been asked at least fifty times in the past couple months. Use the search function here, or on any search engine and you're going to come up with a plethora of information.
You can read all of that and then some and yer still not going to have any better grasp on the Salvia experience until you inhale and hold. After it's all said and done you're going to have more questions then answers.

i do. first few times i used a plain bic and it didnt work. tried a jet lighter and it did. extract has worked with bics for me but i find it way harder to fuck up with a torch/jet lighter.

there actaully is a difference and it makes sense if you understand the chemical salvorin A is realeased at high temperatures (i.e. torch lighter releases more of it ) it is also released and disinigrates very quickly thus why allowing the leaves to burn lessen effect (no joints with this maybe a blunt all by your self:) ) also because of the high temps most people suggest a water bong because the water cools the smoke really well
only put one hits worth in the bong i use like .1-.25g of 10x in a bowl and now basicly burn and suck as fast as you can try and clear it all in one hit( cause the salvorin A will almost all dissapate in the uncleared smoke) and hold for as long as possible or atleast 25-30 seconds exhale and have your mind blown away.

i always use a torch lighter it works best i have used a butane one but had to smoke much more
