A few casing questions.. with day 8 pics..
    #3313074 - 11/03/04 06:56 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

8 days in the Pod now. Just to recap, each casing is a 1/2 pint BRF cake cased with sterilized 60/40 coir/verm in a 8"L x 3.75"W x 2.5"H aluminum baking pan.

I dunked the cakes for 24hrs, then broke them up in a ziploc baggy.

There is about 2/3" of casing material on the bottom, 2/3" of substrate and then 2/3" casing on the top. Didn't use any pH buffer this time, I think I will next time.

Incubated at 84?F for 72 hours; patched, and incubated for another 24 hours. In hindsight, I should have incubated for 48 hours after the patch and perhaps patched twice... Especially casing #2. I should have figured. I have learned that Ecuador is a slow grower(at least compared to Cambodian), and exhibits much less mycelial momentum, initiating fruiting in less than a week.

I will have to treat my Cambodian casings different since they grow much faster, and take 2 weeks to switch from vegetative to fruiting growth.

As some of you have said, 2/3" of substrate is less than optimal, and you can see why. Even though there are more fruits than the typical cake, they are quite a bit smaller. I do think I will yield more on a per-cake basis, but it will probably be close.

I think they would've done much better if they were 2-cake each casings.

Hope you like the pics.

Anyway, as for the questions.. I'm not quite clear on how to care for the casings after the 1st flush.

1) I know I should remove all the aborts I can find.. but what about really tiny pins that aren't obviously aborted? Are you supposed to remove all pins/primordia? I've heard that the casing sets up the 2nd flush as the 1st is finishing, and I see a LOT of very tiny pins and primordia.

2) How do you guys dunk your casings? Could I just fill the whole casing container up with water like you do with cakes in the jar, and then drain it?

I'd imagine that all the uncolonized portions of the substrate will come loose, but I don't think thats really a problem. Exposing the mycelium should be a good thing.

Thanks.

pick of anything thats obvious (like half inch or bigger) then leave the rest on while you dunk.

Yes, Just fill the container up (add some h202), cover with foil and through it in the fridge for 12 hours...then pull her out, re case it a little (even it all out, and this does make a diff!) then fruit it again!

kramer says you don't need to dunk.....just a little misting after harvest should do the trick;)

Yeah, after you harvest the first flush, the Myc. is going to suck the water out of your casing soil like crazy, so you are gonna need to replace it by misting when it seems to get a little dry.

Just a note, your shrooms are beautiful but overly saturated with water maybe cut back on RH or misting slightly or increase FAE slightly. Once again awesome job!!!

Hmm... Really? I thought that was just the way Ecuadors are. The shrooms on my cakes were like that too, and they got a little dry.. although now that I look at some of my other pics, there are some that aren't like that. Interesting. I just thought that they were slightly different shrooms... since these are multispore cakes of course.

If you look at the younger ones, that lighter yellow travels down the cap as it matures... Interesting tho.

I had been laying on the water, cause I noticed the casing shrinking away from the side.. Will have to keep that in mind.

Assuming they are, what are the bad things about being overly saturated like that?

You can notice overly saturated mushrooms by the "transparency" of the caps which also effects margin coloration to some extent. There are a number of reasons you don't want overly saturated shrooms, they are more susceptible to rotting sooner and they'll take longer to fan dry also this may be an indicator of a saturated casing which we all know will lead to contams and poor fruiting if allowed to remain that way (overly saturated). I've done plenty myself (overly saturated) :frown: It is not optimal for healthy grows is all. GL and I don't mean to take anything away from a pro job but since you are doing so well nows the time to fine tune your newly developed skill

Using a pump up mister as opposed to a hand pump mister will help you wet the casings/cakes and not the shrooms. They put out a ultrafine mist with a little nozzle thats pretty specific. Easier on your hand too. I was having my shrooms overwatered and my casings looking dry so I got one.. big time improvment! Along with one of those little battery operated hand fans for a buck. I can only imagine its doing good for them as well.
