Drying techniques
    #3312969 - 11/03/04 07:14 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

First of all, Hi everyone, this is my first post and this website is exactly what I was looking for. I'm stoked to have found such a lively group of shroom fans.

My query is about drying fresh shrooms. I have an "airing" cupboard with a vent inside that blows hot air in from a gas central heating type thing. My idea was to dry shrooms in bulk by putting them on a wire rack, placing them in the cupboard and blowing hot air of around 30 degrees C through the vent. Is this enough to produce dry Shrooms? Would it be better to involve some kind of desiccant in the process? I'm not sure if air that is heated by gas c.h will be too moist or not, what do you reckon?

Cheers from York, England.

This should work fine, although it's not advisable to use heat for drying, your temperature isn't that greater than room temperature. Of course it is better to use a desiccant in the progress but you can get away without it. Many people use food dehydraters. You can always try it and see how they look after 24 hours.

I like the old fan for 24 hours and desiccant chamber for 24 hours method.

I'm just scared of using heat because I don't want to lose potency. Not that other people don't have success, but with my luck something would go haywire and the heat would get too high and render my shrooms as potent as eating a graham cracker.

I'm going to try the fan on the floor, blowing up on the shrooms laying on it, method.

Ok, be careful.  If you leave your fan lying on it's back on something that it can't pull air from it can over heat your fan motor.

I like to put two chairs next to each other, lay my fan across the gap between the two chairs, and then lie my shrooms on top of that.  Works like a charm

Myc seems to handle psilocybin fine at temps of around 30 degrees. No problems there.

For a UKer, Calcium chloride I have found marketed at B+Q.. in the plumbing section (?). Under the brand Kilrock, moisture trap.. which as it turns out is an almost perfect drying chamber with a few adaptions.. If, completely unlike me, you would want to do any such thing .
