No Verm BRF Cakes Colonizing.... Schultz Moisture Control
    #3287621 - 10/27/04 11:18 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

These are my 5 BRF cakes that are colonizing in my tub in tub at 83 - 84 degrees F. These jars contain BRF and Shultz moisture control. NO VERM! This is proof that it works! I inoculated these jars on the 15th and these pics were taken October 28th. This is day 13. The BIG jar with Blue Meanies and the 4 small jars with Creeper. All spores were purchased from sporesource.com

What do you think? Again, no verm here folks

They look good. Some have said though that they may colonize but not fruit. I hope this isnt the case. Good luck and keep us updated.

I think if you can it to colonize, you should be able to fruit...  Question is, though, how effective is it compared to vermiculite.

I've been wanting to try these... not as a replacement to vermiculite, but a supplement. I think it would be awesome....

well, they just finished colonizing today, which is day 18. I will wait 3 more days to ensure total colonization and then case them

They are polyacrylamide crystals. They are non-hazardous.

They absorb up to 400 times their weight in water. 1oz of crystals can absorb over 1 gallon of water.

They're typically used as a soil supplement, and arts and crafts. They can reduce the watering of potted plants by 50 - 70%, since they absorb water when there is an excess and release it as it is needed.

I think they would be excellent to incorporate into all forms of substrate to increase moisture content and availability. I'm going to make some cakes using them very soon.

They're very cheap when bought in their generic form(not name brand like Shultz).

It definately should be made into a tek, but some experimentation is needed to find the optimum ratios of brf/verm/hydrated crystals ....

It could work wonders for yield, particularly for people who have trouble with their cakes getting too dry for whatever reason.

i used 2 parts shultz, 1 part BRF, and i eyeballed the water amount. I just birthed 2 of the cakes but they appeared to be a little dry. I am currently dunking them and will case them late tonight

I'm amazed that it worked with no vermiculite, actually. I would have thought that the substrate wouldn't be light and airy enough.

Those crystals can really pack down, and i'm sure the BRF doesen't help.

Keep us updated, I'm interested. I'm unsure of why it would yeild less then verm cakes. No control for this experiment though :-P

Why?

As I understand it, the only thing that controls yields besides nutrition type and quantity, is available water. The crystals would be a huge buffer, they would theoretically virtually prevent your cakes from drying out.

It could also help with casings, causing them to shrink less per flush.

well i took them out of the dunk last night and they were nice and moist. I patted them with a paper towel and cut them width-wise and cased them. Tonight, i already see signs of them growing into the casing layer. I'll post pics when they are fully penetrating the casing

As for peeps who doubt me i really dont understand why. The cakes were colonized throughout so they obviously have no trouble with that. Why would yeild be lessened?

I think it'll work. But you really need to have verm cakes to compare with to determine the yield difference. Verm is very good about giving up its moisture content to mycelium.

Shultz moisture control might be better, about same or worse. We don't know that until someone does an experiment to come up with some numbers then few other people to duplicate the experiment. For now, all we know is that it gets through colonization.

I'm pretty sure it'll fruit, but the how well it supports mushroom growth will still be asked after you've harvested.

I have no access to shultz moisture control, so I can't even try it even if I wanted....

Just like all the experiments I'm doing, it's not going to be final word or become suggestable items instantly... at least not until few others have duplicated the experiments with similar results.

They aren't doubting you. They are doubting what's doubtful. And it'll remain doubtful until.. well.. you get my drift, right?

Sam

kramer was having his doubts as to how well the smc will give up the moisture when it comes time.
