Transparent hydrophobic membranes
    #3310747 - 11/02/04 07:51 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I recently read an article on growing neural cell cultures and found that there were some similarities between growing mushrooms and growing neural networks. A neural culture needs to retain a certain humidity level, have constant carbon dioxide and oxygen exchange, and a sterile environment free from contaminants. This is very similar to the growing conditions needed for mushrooms.

OK, to the point. Basically, what these neuroscientists have done is found a membrane that is "selectively permeable to oxygen and carbon dioxide, and relatively impermeable to water vapour." It prevents contamination and maintains RH within a given chamber. This membrane is called "fluorinated ethylene-propylene," and more commonly referred to as a "FEP teflon membrane." I think that it has some very useful applications in regards to growing mushrooms.

If a FEP membrane was integrated into a grow-chamber, then there would be an elimination of labour. That is, you would not be required to open the chamber and fan, which would reduce the chances of contamination and drops in RH. So, basically, the only time you would need to open the grow-chamber is when you want to increase/decrease the RH or to harvest your crop.

The only problem I have encountered so far is finding a source for FEP membranes. But, I have only looked on google for about 15 minutes, and I am sure that if one knew where to look then they could find it easily.

I hope that I have expressed this idea sufficiently. What do you guys think about the integration of a FEP membrane into a terranium?

I've heard it said here that cubensis benefits from the tempory drying of the surface of the casing.

Or, probably more accurately, contams cannot deal with it as well as cubensis can.

i use poly fill and get 0 contams, this membrane might be overkill =p
