What is conciousness
    #3309930 - 11/02/04 03:21 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I am having difficulty understanding what conciousness is?

Am I a concious embodiment or is my body concious?

What do we really mean by consiousness.

Please help me to fully understand this concept. :jesus:

It is the thing that percieves everything. Your mind, body, senses, all happen within consciousness. Materialists believe the consciousness is somewhere in the brain. People like Buddhists and Hindus believe consciousness is the ultimate fabric of reality that makes anything exist, and that it exists independant of the body and the physical world.

It is the is

It transcends partial explanation as this is it encompassing our own awareness.

It's like, "I think therefore I am"

It is the third eye, the eternal observer. God, because there is nothing outside of god. Nothing outside of consciousness. Peace

In his book:"The philosophy of Conciousness without an object" Franklin Merrill wolff called pure undifferentiated conciousness (unfettered by the mundane ramblings of the ego/intellect) as pure energy, or "God". This was based on his own experience after attaining Nirvana and one that i myself was able to verify through my own direct experience.

I agree with the experience part, because all there is to experience is yourself...or consciousness.

It is the barrier between the mind and soul.

The barrier, or the conjunctive faculty?

Consciousness is the ability of introspection.

If you look at a worm, which has a small nervous system, everything it does is determined by sensory input into the nervous system. It is an automaton, a robot, in effect "programmed" to Live and Reproduce. You couldn't call this "consciousness". The worm is not truly aware of anything, let alone the concept of Self.

Us humans apparently can chose to direct our Will wherever we wish, away from strictly Life or Reproduction. We are aware of our own existence and have a rigidly defined concept of Self - what separates us from "everything else". We are even able to apply that concept to objects around us, so we can imagine the chair as a separate object from the table! This is what it means to be "conscious" - the ability to introspect and think away from the current sensory stimuli.

Perhaps i did fuck the semantics of that up man, excuse me but i'm really going through a lot or personal stress right now. I meant(of course) the unitive link, that which connects mind and spirit, i apologise for any confusion....

i think of it as the melting pot where: expierence, ego, sense (touch taste ect) are all cooked up together to create what i call "living life" which is diffrent then just living, or just life

did that make sense?

perhaps somebody should change the quote to "am I? If so I shall think about what I am"

i tend to think that conciousness is perception, awareness, that which experiences. that is why when you are renderd senseless (unable to percieve anything) you are called un concious. so the more aware you are, the more concious you are, and thus conciousness is awareness, or that which is aware

A lot of people tell me how being sober sucks because now they have a conscience.

I think you are confusing consciousness or awareness here with possessing a conscience- (Conformity to one's own sense of morality).

To me consciousness is a non physical attribute that allows one to self reflect. It has a physical component whose center is the brain- which is an organic computer. By itself the brain has no more intelligence than a lawn mower.. the source of consciousness is ones self which is non-physical and immortal. The brain is the physical focus of consciousness and the bridge between matter and spirit. Think of the brain as the hardware and consciousness as the software.

Barrier is the wrong word

How about "interface"?

Btw, I do agree with you in that what you described is a part of what we call "consciousness".
