Help - Cannot Remove Substrate (pics)
    #3309533 - 11/02/04 02:20 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I have several fully colonized PF style 1/2 pint jars with BRF. I cannot remove the colonized substrate! What should I do?

Here is a picture of one of the jars(not a colonized one, just an example):

Should I just cut up the substrate in the jar to remove, then make casing?

Feed back appreciated.

Tip the jar upside down and hit the bottom against the side of a table or something hard to knock it loose.

are you trying to remove the parts that are grown or not grown? To me that mycellium looks a wee bit grey and tired. The rest looks pretty wet... I'm not THE expert but I'd say keep the jar how it is and let it fully colonize if it can. If it turns wierd colors or starts talking back to you, kick it... sneeze on it, then throw it out.

Dude. Didn't you read the brackets?

I've tried both of those techniques...
Thanks anyways.

What's wrong with cutting it up to make a casing?

Because you want to wait until the jar is fully colonized (All white) inside and out..... THEN you cut it up and case the bastards.

Open the lid, dump off the dry verm layer.

Flip the jar upside down and keep atleast one finger over the opening.  SLAM your hand off the bottom of that jar to knock it loose.  If it isn't coming out, you aren't hitting it hard enough.

You probably could cut it in the jar if you had a glove box or were particularly sterile..  but it would just make one hell of a mess IMO.

If the cake won't come out fully and you have to break it up then I'd definately say make a casing.

Casings will on average produce more than the cake birthed alone.

Another tek you might want to try if you do happen to get the cake all the way out and don't want to go to the trouble of casing is dunking your cake for 24 hours and keeping it in the refridgerator, and then dumping off all excess water and rolling it in vermiculite. This will also increase your yield from a cake if you haven't heard of it. Sorry if you have.

Did it work well, or was the mycellium damaged?

Fully colonized cake will rapidly shrink and will pull away from the jars. I don't know when you called it 100% colonized, but leave it for another day or two to let the inside colonize fully, if you haven't already. If you've waited a couple of days already... well.. you are supposed to wait 2-4 days... try giving it another day or two. Cake shrink pretty fast in the jar at this point.

If you dunked in the jars, the surface tension of water will make it more difficult to get it out. If you haven't dunked, use another container to dunk after you get the cakes out.

Also, cold jars are slightly smaller than warm jars. If you just took them out of the fridge, keep the jars at room temp(in the light is fine since you are going to fruit now) for a bit before you try to take it out.

And yeah.. if you are planning on casing, just cut it up using sterilized scalpel or knife. No need to worry about keeping as a cake if you are going to case. But have everything ready(all the casing mixes pasteurized, containers cleaned, etc) before you mess with the jars.

Good luck

Sam
Good luck.

one time one was really stuck. just sterlizied a small knife (crudely) and slid it in along the side, pressed slightly, and pulled back out. No problems were had.
