The Election and Tempermental People
    #3309802 - 11/02/04 05:02 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

So today I really pissed off a freind of mine. He's a pretty liberal guy, overall pretty mellow overall, butI try not to get into politics with him because it seems like he is so impassioned when it comes up. Well I didn't think much of it, but this is what I said:
"If John Kerry get's elected you will be pretty disapointed. He's not going to catch Osama with a flick of his wrist, he's not going bring more "Allies" into Iraq and he's not going to stop the violence in Iraq. His tax hikes won't help the economy either"

My freind went berserk. First he starts yelling
"How can you be so pessimistic?! You're just ignorant! I fucking hate it when ignorant people support these..the most evil people on the the planet! It makes me so fucking...makes me want to Kill!" (yes, he actually said the last part)
This is paraphrased, the rant was a little longer.

The guy blew up and I barely said anything. So from then on I just kept to myself.
It has been my very subjective experience that in face to face debates people on the left wig out a lot more because a) they are so impassioned, and b) they aren't used to actually talking to anyone who might challenge their views. I am surrounded by lefties night and day, and am quite used to in arguments being called ignorant, misinformed, etc, for incorrect views, so it doesn't bother me and I can keep my cool and stay calm when discussing issues. I have had many "liberal" freinds who simply aren't used to ever being confronted on their views and they just can't take it. They hardly ever talk to anyone remotely conservative about anything so when it happens they explode. That anyone anywhere, especially a rational person, thinks any differently than them is simply beyond their comprehension.

Now, of course this is only my experience (KOTT seems fond of describing opposite situations), but it almost makes me wish Kerry would win, just because people like my freind are too tempermental and zealous to be able to handle Bush winning. So many people will go crazy. They are just too impassioned. Myself and most Bush supporters I know are pretty thick skinned, but I worry about the Kerry guys. If Bush does win I feel sorry for Kerry supporters that were way to emotionally invested.

Politics is a very touchy issue for a lot of people, both left and right. It's almost on par with religion in this respect.

Dude don't act like Right Wing asshole's shit don't stink. There are as many if not MORE close minded dickheads on the right who are just as ignorant.

There are some places where if you mention that you are a liberal, you will get the shit kicked out of you. I doubt the same would ever happen if you mentioned to a liberal that you were conservative.

You might recall I wrote right in my post that this was only MY subjective experience. I can only speak for myself as a moderately conservative person surrounded by lefties. It is risky to generalize about anything, but it seems to me from what I've seen a Kerry victory would upset Bush voters less than a Bush one would for Kerry voters, even if Bush gets more votes.

And as far as how I get treated as a conservative, I have no idea because I am smart enough to keep my thoughts to myself. In the past I have had property defaced and stolen, I have also had freinds writing for the school paper who had their stuff vandalized and recieved threats of physical harm. I know better than to draw attention to myself.

Over here it's quite different. In Utah pretty much everyone is conservative.
