Interesting Terrarium Idea, opinions wanted

I have an old deep freeze, about 6ft long, 3 feet wide, and 4 feet in depth and was considering using this as a terrarium for my casings. My concern is that due to its size it may not be feasible as I may not be able to maintain a high enough RH.
Has anyone ever heard of anyone attempting anything similar to this or does anyone have any opinions as to whether or not this will be possible?

You will definately need a humidifier for that. Geolite/perlite would absolutely be out of the question IMO.
An ultra-sonic humidifier should do the trick.
It's possible with a little ingenuity.

yes its very possible, deep freezers are air tight,it wouldnt be hard to get the RH high in there,if you had an ultrasonic hooked up somehow it would be extremely easy, but you want to keep in consideration of air exchange because its such a valuable part to success, personally i would buy a shit load of perlite and put it deep on the bottom,i dont see any reason why that wouldnt get the RH up...but you would also have to mount some type of light on the inside too, maybe something like a cool tube fluoro so it doesnt bring your temps up too high..hope this helps and happy shroomin!

That's quite large, going all out I see.

yeah id think youd need more than 1 ultra sonic and seems like kinda a waste unless your gonna put shelves in it cause its so deep maybe if you put shelves and than put LED under each shelf you could have quite a bulk operation going on or if you did the whole bottom straw and poo that would produce quite some yeilds also who were you planning on lighting it

Yea, perlite would work I just figured it would be a bit of a mess considering the size of the job he's trying to set up.
Even geolite might be a bit of a pain in the ass. Especially if you had a bad case of contams once, you would have to clean all that perlite/geolite again whereas if you used a sonic humidifier all you'd have to do is clean out the freezer and wipe it up real good with lysol or a bleach/water mix.
The light was the thing I was worried about. I don't know how you'd provide light very easily without increasing your temperatures, but I suppose in a large area like that you could just mount one light in the center of the lid that is pretty small (since it doesn't take much light to initiate pinning) or even a series of LED lights around the top.
For air exchange I'm sure you could rig some kind of filter through the side with a bit of cutting, or even a HEPA.

I would definitely use perlite and a humidifier and I know I would need some light in there as well. Just wasnt 100% on the RH...the shelving idea is excellent as well. I am just toying with this at the moment, I appreciate all the input.

you could always put your perlite in bins to make cleanup a lot easier.
probably wouldn't be hard to punch a few holes in the thing if you're willing to go that far. that way you could hook up all the necessarry hoses and shit.
lighting, easy; just use some epoxy or get some self tapping screws to mount a few fixtures to the lid. you don't need that much light.
regulating the temp i think would be the biggest challenge.
sounds like a great idea! good luck!

There is no reason why geolite wouldn't work..
Your biggest concern is going to be air exchange. The typical automated air exchange via air pump won't work, unless you create a ventilation hole or two.

ive recently started to convert an upright freezer has shelves like a fridge you defenitly need to invest a little $$ and some time for an environment control system im using the area where the compresor was to house a blower/recirculator with a hepa filter on the intake, the idea is to able to circulate air in the chamber and be able to mix fresh incoming with it. for temp control im testing the idea of a temp controled bath that circulates warmed or cooled water through the coils that run through the shelves for humidity im using fine mist spry nozels with a pump and resivoir

The lighting is easy and not really a concern. I hadn't really considered air exchange(via a pump, anyway.) I was planning on just opening the lid and fanning/misting it a few times a day(as with my generic Rubbermaid terrariums)
