Heh an odd question about cakes...
    #3308096 - 11/02/04 09:00 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I'm about to make 24 more cakes. I'm going to try my hand at casings. However 24 cakes will prob be to many for what I need, so can you just let cakes grow in the dark for a long while? Or will they rot? Thanks guys.

Oh also, why not just use clear plastic glasses, the kind you can toss, I guess they might melt in the PC?

I believe I've heard that you can put colonized cakes in the refridgerator if you need to keep them for extended times. Never done it myself though.

Wouldn't that waiste mycluim? or would it produce the same amount if I did 8 jars at a time? See I don't want to get more birthing chambers and turn my house into a mushroom house. I just want to use my 1 birthing chamber that holds about 12 cakes.

If you think a birthing chamber that can hold 12 cakes, will hold, and produce with out waiste, a 24 cake casing, please say so.

Here is a pic of the chamber now w/ 8 cakes in it.

And those cakes are normal PF size, as you could see 12 cakes would be fine in there as well.

Thanks again guys.

that will not hold a casing of that magnitude...try storing jars in fridge for 2 weeks max (just my guestimate & reasoning)

well it depends on how much space you want to keep for cakes and how much for the casing... like this:

Nice pics btw

I suppose I would just want to do a full casing, so how much will that birthing chamber, in terms of crumbled cakes in casings, will that hold?

:Edit: also thanks for answering all of my silly questions

I say break it up. Figure out what size container you would need to make 4-6 casings with 1 1/2" of colonized substrate each..

That way if any of your casings go bad or develop any problems, you can simply toss or relocate them, and you will still have some to fall back on.

i made a quick calculation cause I was wondering about the same thing. I think you can have about 20 /24 cased cakes in your pod.

Why? Like this calc I made on my own pod. We have the metric system so it is in liters and centimeters.

Hight of cakesubstrate in casing = 4 CM
Length of casing = 75 CM (pod is 80 cm long)
Broadth of casing = 35 CM (pod is 40 cm broadth)

In liters this is 10,5 liter of "cake volume". (h*b*l)
If one uses 250 ML cakes (about 1/2 pint and so 1/4 Liter) there will fit 42 cakes in that casing!

If I would only use cakes with 5 cm (2 inches) in between each other there would fit 20-24 cakes in the pod.

With the casing about twice as many!

Thanks 4 triggering me to calculate this!!

Shit now my PC REALLy is to small!

the thing i like about casings is that you don't have to compensate room around them for the mushrooms to grow like you do with cakes. you can just put them there and the kids don't lean out of the container.

i think you could get a pretty decent casing going. they're a learning experience, but you'll get the hang of it.

i believe i remember george castanza saying kramer suggested a month in the fridge at the most, but i'm not sure.

from what ive heard anything higher than a 4 in substrate casing is waste so i believe if you get a few casings and your chamber is a good size you could definately use all 24 cakes but if not you could also try just fruiting them out of the jar around you room if you can keep the temps right and that would add a little extra to your stock

yes i always have an overwhelming urge to start ne jars and i am now in the same place as you not only dont i have enough terrarium room i ran out of incubator room so im not starting any new jars for a month or so until all these finish flushing

ok well I have the 1st 8 jars in the PC now, so you figure about 16 jars to make a decent casing for that BC. That sounds good to me.
