Just want to make sure: coco slabs
    #3307674 - 11/02/04 01:03 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Is coco slabs the same as what is described as coco coir in the casing faq ?

here is the product description:

Coco-Mix Is an organic substrate that can be used in combination with special coco nutrients containing organic minerals. Coconut fibres are comprised of much air and little water; the pH falls between 5 to 6. Coco may be used in all hydroponics applications in place of rock wool by filling small pots with Coco-Mix and treating just as a cube. It has also a tremendous capacity for absorbing water, and responds well to nutrients. Coco-Mix can also be used in the rejuvenation of All-Mix or in other soil mixes to improve aeration and nutrient uptake.
Available in sacks of 50 litres and in slabs of 1 metre

there is a 50% off on the 1 metre slabs, I was thinking about ordering some of them. I just want to make sure this is the same thing and can be used for casings.

what also striked me is that the ph is 5-6. Isnt that a little bit low?

Yes, that is a little low. Buffering is not necessary, but it certainly wouldn't hurt anything. Coir can range from 5.2 - 6.8.

It's not nearly as bad as peat, though.. 3 - 4 ... which must be buffered.

I didn't use any buffer on my 60/40 casings and they're doing alright.

Yeah, I never buffer with my 70/30 (coir/verm) and I've even been known to go 80/20 with no probs. But george knows his shit well, and you probably would notice a change in yield.

Cold-processed coir is colonized with a number of fungi that are beneficial soil organisms.

There are many, many, many different strains of trichoderma. I don't know if they're all bad for mushroom growth, or just some.

I honestly don't know much about it all, but this is the reason that you want to sterilize your casing material.

5-10 mins in the microwave, covered, is all that is needed. It's OK to sterilize casing material in the microwave because there is no perfect water balance to get screwed up and no grains to caramelize.

Stir it after 5(I use a fork that is submerged in boiling water during its off-time), put it back in there for another 5, let it cool thoroughly, case.

Hmmm... I had 1 casing with trich ever and that was because I didn't PC the casing material properly and I removed the whole casing from the container it was in when I put it in the pod. I think if you PC your shit there should be no prob.
