Alder Chips....question
    #3306718 - 11/01/04 08:40 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I was wondering if someone could please elaborate further on the "Alder Chips"? If someone could explain what and where a Alder tree can be found, maybe a picture, i don't want to sound like a total dumb ass here, I'm new to hunting and have been reading the hunting form for a few weeks now, I here about alder chips left and right in every FAQ, etc....  I'm just looking for a little more info on the habitat (if you will) of the cyan so I can be more successful in finding my own down the road.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

Looking at an Alder tree wouldn't really help. Alder chips tend to be light in color. They are kind of a light tan color much of the time. They also tend to dry out faster than some of your other wood chips.

Look at the iimages in my recent post the mycoporn of shrooms on P. cyanescens found sunday and saturday. Those are alder from chopped branches. Their is also steer-co woodchips form Sawdust supply here in Seattle, about 28.00 dollars a ton, or a fifty pound bag for a cheaper prince. That use to bne a big source of cyans on pravate home lands int he city. Now in the last 12 years, broken alder branches are the number one meal fo food for the mycelia to thrive on. Usually lasts two to theree years in some locations. When the mulch has lost all its nitrogen and other nutrients, the shrooms do not come back, unless the same mulch is used to replace the old. That is rare because of the loggin areas are always changingg and the clearcuts are mostly now all illegal. There are several new ones every year but when the cedar is logged out, the seeds of the alders fall along the logging routes and thus the ader trees spread. P. pelliculosa grow by the hundreds of trhousands in patches in the clearcuts here in Washington and oregon. That same alder fo0rm the trees hads spores for P. cyans and when the trees end up chipped or chopped into bark and mulch, that provideds a good home for the shrooms togrow.

I have been finding ps. cyans in the wild. The alders I have been finding them under have been kind of stubby and broad. The leaves are ovular with a pointy tip, and they also kinda shrivel, or roll slightly. The trunks of the trees have been bunched, with multiple shoots grouping together. They also contain two cones. skinny thin cones, and more thick short cones. Both are rather small, compared to most other tree cones, for instance: pine cones are much larger.

Also, another thing I notice is blackberry bushes. The cyans I find seem to be growing under the bushes, where it is less dense, but sometimes in the thick as well, way back in there. But if you don't wanna get cut up. Look in downtown seattle. This is the only place I know of, which is not wild.

I don't know if it is actual cones by definition, but they do have something that looks like cones:

They are catkins, not cones.

see below. Mjshroomer

ALDER
Background for teacher/parent:
There are two kinds of alder in Marin, the white alder and the red alder (sometimes called Oregon alder). Both grow along streams, often along with redwoods. The red alder grows near the coast, while the white alder does not grow along the immediate coast. This is a white alder, but children can simply call this tree alder.
The female catkins look like little cones but alders are not related to pines. Often you can see new green cones on a tree along with older brown ones. Alders also produce males catkins.
Native Americans made a red-brown dye from alder bark

Nice, those looked like the ones I've seen in comp. "at a distance" shots. They are formed quite similarly round. Peace, and thanks for the correction, MJ!
