Trouble with Desmanthus illinoiensis seedlings
    #3307525 - 11/02/04 02:05 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

My Desmanthus illinoiensis seedlings are tipping over, they have developed a long thin stem that is hanging sideways, the plant is simply not strong enough to raise up. I have tried to tie them up also. Do I need to use a pea innoculant for them? I read something in the FAQ about this. If this is what I need, can someone please explain how I can do this?

most likely you either need better lighting, better air circulation, or both.

They are under HPS 250W lights, about 1.2 meters under it. I was going to mention it but this innoculant thing distracted me. I thought that they might was getting too much light and was stretching since they grow so tall and slimmy. The size of the seedslings varies from 20 to 50 cm and perhaps 2-4 mm thick stem. But they stretch sideways not upwards.

The airciruclation in the grow room should be good but I can try to put a fan next to them.

They wouldn't be stretching from too much light, and I doubt your light is the problem. Do you have a fan or anythign supplying air circulation? I don't jsut mean to prevent the air from getting stagnant, but also to provide somewhat of a breeze. Good air circulation that gently blows the seedlings around a bit forces them to toughen up their stems. Otherwise I don't know...I've never heard of desmanthus needing to be inoculated with nitrogen fixing bacteria, but if you want to try it won't hurt anything. Just plants some peas, or beans, or both, in the same pot as the Desmanthus and then cut the pea (or bean) seedlings at surface level (thus killing them, but not uprooting them) when they reach a few centimetes in height. Best of luck to you, and be sure and post some pictures if you can.

ive been having a hard tim esprouting mine...only 1 sprouted. but it did the same as what you describe and is completely whilte/opaque. i got the pot in a plastic bag, so im betting hooty's right in saying they need more ventilation.

The best way to sprout those seeds is to pour boiling water over them and let them sit overnight until they swell up. I put some outside and they died but I don't know what went wrong. I have some seed to swap if anyone is interested.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
