Good setup?

I have a clear rubbermaid container thats large enough for 12 jars and stands about a foot high. It has 2 inches of perlite in the bottom and 1 inch of water. I bought a vicks cool mist for air exchange and ran a four foot length of 3/4 inch tubing out the front (duct taped off air tight) and taped tyvek over the filter (air intake). I originally planned on running the tube in the side of the tub towards the bottom but found it too difficult to cut through the thick plastic. So, i just ran the tubeing under the lid and down so it hangs just above the perlite. The lid clicks down on the ends so it is still secure even with the tube underneath and also leaves a small gap that will allow air to escape the Pod. Does this improvisation sound acceptable?

I think it'll work as much as any cool mist set can... but I don't think it'll maintain 99% humidity... more like 90%. Coolmist moves a lot of air. And the output will basically nullify humidity from perlite. I don't know, though... and I don't have enough stuff to test it out for you at the moment... Run it and see where the RH stablizes at.
Good luck

That almost defeats the purpose of having an extra equipment for air exchange IMO. What do you think, KaptKid? I guess it's better than fanning... but extra $20 equipment and all that bulk attached to terrarium for minimum benefit? hmmm...

The fact that the hose is pinched off and i have tyvek over the filter seems to reduce the output quit a bit. I was not aware of it reducing the effectiveness of my perlite though. The main reason i bought it is so i wouldnt have to fan. I live in an old house with an old furnace that pumps dust around like nobodys business. Not to mention 2 cats and a dog. I feel that if i were to open the top and fan several times a day i would almost certainly contaminate my cakes with green mold. Next time i'll use air pumps and the pmp method i just thought that the vicks would be better.

You should've built an PMP. It would've cost you about the same. oh yeah.. watch for the water dripping out of the humidifier. Some water leaks out of the humidifier(after about 30 min of running) on mine when I try to reduce flow. But now that you have it.. run it with a hygrometer in it. See where it stablizes. Good luck Sam
