My friend thinks you should definitely patch those spots on the right side of that casing, so you have a more even pin-set in a few more days. He would also take it easy on the misting or whatever technique your using to add water, that casing may be slightly to saturated.

Yes, patch.

I only patched once, and I'm feeling it now.. I should have patched twice. My pinset would've been much more even.

When you patch, how much casing do you cover the myc with? As little as possible so it is just barely covered or do you put a full 1/2" over it? Also, basically you're just trying to cover the dense areas of mycelium that look like they're going to start to pin, but leave the light fluffy mycelium that is just emerging through the casing layer alone? The Dude is doing his first casing right now and would like to know if he is on the right track.

Very little. Yes only patch the dense areas. This gives the rest of the casing which should be right below the surface a chance to catch up so it all comes in at once.

I suggest Kramer tries it. Kramer mentioned getting similar yeilds from cakes to casings..perhaps things like that would make your casings give a little more oomph then your cakes?

kramer's myc always seems to come in even...he never cases his millet/verm cakes any more(fruits them as cakes or uses for spawn),just more hassle with no more yield...he did case 4 Qts of rye(cambo)last week..it came in even so why patch?
if you need to patch(or at least feel the need to patch) by all means go ahead and patch(kramer will however sprinkle a little casing in the divots that are caused by harvesting!)
kramer is just not into waisted motion
:tongue2:
when Magash starts patching before his first flush kramer says he may reconsider!

I got a thought... your casing container looks like a petry dish.
Why don't you go to a 99cent store and pick up some nice platic containers? Sorry.. had to get that out...

Back to the topic... I hope that's the one you didn't patch... It looks like it's happy growing... I'd get a whip out and start milking that baby for some fruits. It's gonna become hard to moisturize the casing if it keeps on growing. I can't really tell if you got knots, but if it hasn't, I would patch that up very lightly... But wait for a second opinion.

As far as your bulk, yeah.. I think you are being a bit impatient. Hang in there.

Sam

Sam1912 Its 4in dia. x 2in deep. Opened up a 1/2 qt. to find it stalled.Scraped out the uncolonized wbs and used the rest.Got just a little bit more than a 1/2 pt.Wanted to keep it separated from the rest.

SubGen1us, Good eyes, thats a piece of straw sticking up.Will have to watch that in the future could be a good way for contams to enter.

Question.  After pasteurizing casing material how long is it good before needing to be repasteurizing? Can it be repasteurizing?

Thanks
