Growing outside
    #3306099 - 11/01/04 08:20 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck growing shrooms outside in an area where they don't normally grow. I can't grow inside right now, but pscilocybe mushrooms don't grow in my area. Would it be possible to spray spores on manure or in the woods and have it grow?

you would be very very very lucky if it did, there are so many factors to consider when looking at doing outdoor growth, i have no idea about it sorry :frown:

I would NOT recommend simply spraying spores on poo, but don't rule out outdoor grows. Right now I have an outdoor patch which just put out about an oz (dry) of ecuadorians when there is not a single wild mushroom to be seen. If you want to go outdoors, you will still have to go through the same steps as to produce a casing. You need to think about making some bulk spawn (grain, straw, etc) and also to enhance the environment, perhaps enriching the spot with some composted manure ($1 at walmart). Growing outdoors is not necessarily easier than growing inside. It takes a little more patience and aside from occasional waterings, is more "hands-off".

look into what kind of actives grow in your area and maybe try to start an outdoor bed of those
ike cubs are not too easy to grow outdoors where they don't grow outdoors;)

If the climate is right-Psilocybe Cubensis will grow outside just about anywhere in the world! NOT NATURALLY ON IT'S OWN! But you can make an outdoor patch fruit given the right conditions. I have grown them outside in the good ol' state of Vermont without a problem!

You only need 2 weeks of perfect weather(70-90'f temps & 70-95% humidity)for an outdoor patch to fruit(1 week for colonization and 1 week to fruit). If the temps are right, you can provide the moisture along with rains by watering daily or as needed.Cubensis will fruit in lower temps around 50-60'f but not as well.As long as the temps are around 70'f and you keep them moist by watering THEY WILL FRUIT!

Cool, maybe I have a chance then. I think I'll try it out next spring. The one thing I'm worrying about is contamination. There are so many steps to keep things from being contaminated inside, how am I supposed to do it outside?

Also, If I can get the cakes covered in myc. and make a "casing" outside, would I have a better chance at a succesful grow? Keeping the actual mushrooms hidden is a problem, cultivating the mycelium and keeping it hidden should be much easier.

Last night I threw out some jars that I thought were contamed or atleast didn't fully colonize with the rest of my jars. The temps are around 60 during the day and 40s at night. Any possibility this little patch will be around still in the spring or are the temps just too cold for the myc to get a foothold and it will just die off?

i hae tried to just "throw some jars outside under mulch and they immediately contamned with both cobweb and pink and green mold so yeah if your gonna do this i would suggest atleast putting a small barrier between the shrooms and the rest of the world like a plastic lining and some casing material or something
