Gymnopilus luteofolius - Magic w/ new Pics 5/2
    #3304829 - 11/01/04 03:29 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I just found a large fruiting of Gymnopilus luteofolius and am curious if anyone here has ever ingested this species. If so, can you please give me some details.

I'll have some pics next weekend as these were not found near my home.

edit:

I'll have more pics later. Here's one for now:

Thank you!

Joshua

Nope.. I don't know man.. Those gyms are kinda eerie I think cause not many people have done them, and from what I heard potency can vary from decent,, to none at all...

yeah, id like to see your pics.

ive found dozens of luteofolius patches,
and bioassayed them a couple times...

post a picture, i should be able to tell if
they are actual G. luteofolius or not.

I've already identified them, I'd be happy to accept a second opinion though. You'll have to wait until this weekend....on a long shot I might have pics in a couple of days.

I am more interested in your experience with the bioassay.

josh, i pm'd you something about the bioassay

id be very curious to see your pics, and see if you identified them correctly

not to say you don't know what your doing; it's just that the Gymnopilus family is not as easy to identify as most think

How the hell do you ID gyms? I can't find anything on what species of Gyms exist except for what's in PMoTW... And that's not much.

I understand. I know for sure that they are Gymnopilus...and I am pretty sure they are luteofolius, but a second opinion will be much appreciated.

Hey everyone....... Isn't about time we have a full-on discussion about Gymnopilus!? I find them very odd and interesting. A nostalgic/different type of trip. I mention around the board of my findings and multiple opportunities I have with this fungi and its defiantly something to talk about. I have found 3 active species of GYMS all very similar but unique to each they're own.

My first found was very odd to me. huge clusters hanging by the side of the [side walk]. Growing from grass. Looks exactly like the type GUMBY recently posted. Staining like a cubie! weird.....blueish green.
Out of all the things I've read about GYMS its that they hardly stain......and if so it'll be by the base. The taste is bitter.....hands down bitter almost like some type of ground spice that's its after awhile.

Now for the 2ND GYM i luckily found them while i was taking a walk. They were growing off a log. 5 beautiful specimens. bright yellow/orange look smelled like cloves (the spice) The taste was just plain bitter as well but with no spice aftertaste. I didn't get to see if they stained or not.

Third patch a found hauled pounds about pounds. Found them on wood chips. Color is pretty much like the first species I go just a bit different looking. The taste.......ugh most bitter of them all taste like bitterest greens that have not been washed!!!!!!

Yeah when you find gymns....you REALLY find gyms. I found pounds the about a week ago....I heard that they where inactive and tossed them. Oh well.

I'm gonna try to see if I can track down a copy of that monograph tonight. I have a feeling we might be finding a bunch of different species of Gyms, but most books only include 2-6 species. I believe the genus has about 20+ species in it.

That would be great!

The only characteristic that didn't match closely to luteofolius was the flesh color. Mine aren't very white. I figured they were waterlogged.

A monograph would be valuable.

:chuckles: neat picture joshua..

they certainly do appear to be a type of Gymnopilus mushroom, i think

the purplish caps are a definate characteristic of G. luteofolius

the stems look a little bit strange tho

G. luteofolius might look a bit different on your side of the woods than they do here in florida..

more pictures would help,
a picture of the gills would help too

'tough call, as usual

Gymno's are tough to ID  haha

Keep shroomin
Post more pics of these

These grew under a tarp. I would expect the stems to be elongated. I didn't have an adequate camera for close up pics. I have some day and a half old specimens I will photo soon.

here is a G. luteofolius collection of mine,
with circles around the ones i ate..

did you see any blue colorations on the caps or the mycelium?

G. luteofolius has the tendancy to be a highly variable looking shroom..

Yes, greening (blue + yellow) was present on some of the caps.

hm. yeah blue plus yellow equals green,
but luteofolius does not exhibit the color green,
they stain sky blue at the mycelium,
and they get dark blue splotches underneath the purple caps...

you're in oregon correct?

i might suggest they could be the mushroom Gymnopilus aeruginosus, which become tinged greenish or dull bluish green, and drying yellowish

or actually,,, possibly Gymnopilus braendlei which has purplish caps when young, sometimes with green stains

are the gills of the younger mushrooms whitish?

the monograph also notes that G braendlei has been collected in washington state in november. (but it may have actually be washington d.c. and not washington state)

this monograph is some serious gymnopilus business i swear
