so long as those who control the world prosper from war and misery? *edit: changed 'us' to 'the world' to make it less personal.*

I don't think the people that run the world actually prosper from suffering. If everybody lived in a first world country with free trade, capitalist economies, high standards of living, human rights and no violence everybody would benefit. It is not a zero sum game.

It's funny how you and I see things eye-to-eye spiritualy (based on our conversations in S&P), and yet we are semmingly the antithesis' of eachother pollitically!
All I can say is that I hope you are right. I wish I could believe that things aren't as bad as they seem to me. Unfortunately, whether because I am mixed up in my head or simply because of the information I have assimilated and puting 2 and 2 together (that still equals 4, right?), it does look bad to me.
War proffits...no further discussion necessary.
Missery (i.e. anxiety, emptiness, fear...all your baser emotions) drives rampant consumerism far beyond what we actually need. Affluenza is the new dissease and its spreading fast.
What would happen to the stock market if suddenly everyone realized that internal peace and happiness is free?

I recommend watching the 'Fog of War'... War is pretty much human nature, people always find reasons to go for war because war makes money, directly, or indirectly. It makes money, it makes heroes, it makes martyrs, it makes criminals, it makes medals, it makes allies, it makes enemies, it makes land, its what makes a military which is what makes a nation, which makes an economy so we can make food and live peacefully in our homes, which were made by our grandparents with their bare hands.

Those people get their power from us. If we collectively stopped supporting them and buying their bullshit propaganda, we could have a revolution, possibly even a non-violent one.

To oversimplify: Since the beginning, the backbone of every strong nation has been its defense powers. It's gonna take us a long time to
a) honestly come to terms with this as a society b) begin to figure out how to change it

If you take a look at the way international money market traders plunder the weak currency of poor nations and how companies exploit the cheap workforce in many countries you may start to understand that in its current form the global economy is indeed a zero sum game.
It is no secret that the gap between rich and poor is widening everywhere, not just in the developing nations but also in most countries in the west. The rich are getting richer and it seems they dont mind how they do it. Currently the smoke and lights they use to convince many that things are going well and that our current economical structures are the best way to bring a higher standard of living to all people in the world are holding firm, but hopefully that is not a situation that can last and it will be interesting to see how the super rich choose to maintain the status quo when and if their carefully crafred illusion ever waivers suffieciently for enough people to see the truth.

Think again. Or do you really think Bush invaded Iraq to free the Iraqi people?
everybody lived in a first world country with free trade, capitalist economies, high standards of living,
High standards of living for who? Capitalism isn't designed to work that way. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Does this mean that you -- Alex123 -- think the people that run the world actually profit from suffering?

But it does anyway. That's what's so cool about it.

You are describing Communism. Under Capitalism, the rich (presuming they are competent) get richer and the poor (presuming they are competent) get richer as well.
