Depends what you mean by 'active'
Cereus is not ideal for human consumption but it probably has substances in it as a secondary deterrant for animals, as do most cacti. If it was suitable for humans you'd know about it.
I'm pretty sure there are quite a few Genus's with a peruvianus in them, the name was not given due to the alkaloids hehe

There's no real reason to eat Cereus cacti. Not active.

genus Cereus has no members with usable amounts of mescaline (there are some species with interesting cardiotonic alkaloids (e.g. Cereus grandiflorus)
genus Trichocereus has quite a few species within it, and maybe half of them can contain enough mescaline to make them useful to psychedelic enthusiasts...

who said anything about mescaline? i was just thinking active...could be other things that could make people trip in some cacti we do not know about. im not saying they are, i doubt they (cereus) are. but cant deny the possibility.

There even possibly be a nice drug/cure out there in some cacti, im sure you'd need to isolate out the alkaloids that make you sick.

I read somewhere maybe 3 years or so ago after obtaining one of these cacti, that they do infact contain some forms of potentially active alkaloids. Don't have any links now, but I'd say look in Shulgins direction, last I heard he was doing work on non-mescaline cacti alkaloids.

there is no record that i've read of ancient use of this genus except for cardiotonic proprieties... (flowers used).

Happy Halloween from The Shroomery!
Mostly cactus derived isoquinolines. He's been describing them more as anti-depressants.
I'd venture to guess that many an uninformed person has bought cereus peruvianus thinking it was Trichocereus peruvianus and cooked it up and ate it without asking anyone for an ID, i'd also bet they're probably still alive too. Most likely "i got this cactus and ate it and nothing happened, what's wrong?"
