a curriosity i'm looking into
    #3302899 - 11/01/04 12:14 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

have a question here for anybody who has any information. my foaf is trying something different this time regarding the cultivation of mushrooms. normally it's been the process to create a three layer sandwich if you will, with substrate on the bottom, myc in the middle and then more substrate on top ( casing that is) [he] has been reading a book lately and wanted to try something new. we still used a sub layer composed of organic potting soil mixed with coffee grounds. crumbled the myc into marble size pellets and put them on top. placed the whole thing in the basement, without a top layer, and let it sit for a few days. now we believe it's the best time to put a top layer on. what is the best thing to use for a top layer. I was thinking of using a mixture of vermaculite mixed with charcoal ashes for extra nutrients, if any exsist, and seeing how that works. but is there something else we could try? we are just hoping to get a few ideas and see which ones work the best. as of today the myc is getting very fuzzy and doesn't seem to mind that there is no top mixture. as far as I know this strain isn't a wood loving strain so wood chips haven't been part of the equation. any input would be greatly appreciated.

just verm.....just coir..... a mix of both...whatever you want. afoaf has experimented with seed startermixed with 30-50% coir and has awsome results!

be experimental and let the community know!

I don't think your supposed to have many nutrients in the casing layer and it would also be easier for contams to grow.

pet store. usually eco earth or bed a beast brand coconut fiber.

it's reptile bedding. so if a pet store does reptiles, there's a good bet they'll have it as bedding material.

look under the casing section of advanced growing on the site, it has some coco coir information.
