Factors that determine size

I see alot of pcitures of nice 50 gram+ fresh mushies. I was wondering what cause these beautiful little (or not so little) fellas. The reason why I ask is because an acquaintance of mine always ends up putting out very tiny unimpressive fruits.
Are these big boys just chance?

I think a lot of the people that post those have been doing it a long time and have it dialed. I think if you listens to everyones advice you'll get something close after a couple tries.

they probably dunk and case, initiate pinning greatly, and use grains. grains, IMHO, are what make for bigger fruits. theyre like 4-6 times as potent as a PF cake.... oh, and another thing; dunking is very easy, i did it on my first try and had no problems. simply fill the jars they're in with water that has about 1/100th bleach in it. refrigerate it if u wanna make it work even better. and if u want to stick with cakes for now, def. try rolling. i did that and just left it ina trashbag with perlite and bleachon the bottom and forgot, and today, one month later, i have about 2.5 grams harvested. GOOD LUCK!!!

If you want it for novelty value, you can pick a pin early and let it grow and let no other pins grow by picking all other pinheads.
But if you are talking about in general, you need to look into strain characteristics. Each mycelium network will put out as much as it can put out. Normal, greedy person would not go for the 50g monster instead of 70g+ smaller ones.
Your friend might not want to give the mycelium network enough care(meeting ideal conditions) for them to grow large.
Who knows... but no need to grow huge IMO, tiny ones bite hard

poo makes for bigger mushrooms. theres other things but the biggest mushrooms is not always the best. medium sized one are favorite i think. medium as in 1 - 2 grams each.

Alright thanks for the advice guys.
I was just looking for something to maybe up the size a lil. The reason why I ask is I have a couple jars colonizing at the moment (my first grow) and I just didnt wanna end up with a dissapointing flush (I really was refering to a friend by the way)...I`ll be thrilled if I end with say 2.5-3 grams dry, as his first flushes are gennerally about 1.5-2 grams dry (then again he doesnt take his mush cultivation very seriously, and looks at as a way of "getting fucked up", which is why I refer to him as an "acquaintance" instead of a friend ).
But thanks for all yer help, I can only hope that one day I`ll be half as wise as most of you guys.

4-6 times more potent seems like a bit of a made up figure. that would mean you'd have to take .5 grams to trip your balls off. are poo/grain grown mushrooms really anymore potent than cake grown mushrooms?

in a out door bed someone made he used poo/sraw/and some bird seed in the layers with about 5 quarts of PF jars, they were pretty good size and they were VERY VERY strong compared to the orginal cakes that were used the cakes that were put in were 'spent and alreadyd had a few flushes) so i would say that it does make a very large difference
