My first casings, day 6 in the Pod.. with mycoporn! Edit: Now with day 7 pics
    #3300629 - 10/31/04 08:42 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Wow, these Ecuadors really pinned fast. I don't think I quite left them in the incubator long enough.. I expected more mycelial momentum than I got. One more day probably would have evened it up a little more, especially casing #2. I suppose it's not terribly bad for my first time, though.

Each casing is a 1/2 pint BRF cake cased in a 8"L x 3.75"W x 2.5"H aluminum baking pan.

2/3" 60/40 coir/verm on the bottom, about 2/3" substrate, 2/3" 60/40 on top. Didn't use any pH buffer ... Incubated at ~84?F for 72hrs; patched, incubated another 24hrs, and then put into Pod.

Casing #1:

Casing #2:

Casings > Cakes. Just based on these pics alone, I expect much more yield per cake(since these are single-cake casings) than with open-air cakes.

Highly recommended!

They're turning out OK I guess..  I should have figured that another 24hrs of incubation would have been appropriate for the slow Ecuadors. Oh well, live and learn.

So this contributes to my conflicting info. You used 1 1/2 pint BRF in a 8"x4" pan? I have asked more than once and have been told anything from 1 cake per 4"x4" of area, up to this example here. I hope this is on topic enough to ask here but, what is the suggested cakes to surface area ratio for casings? I have 2 jars I'm going to case out of my 6 and I'm thinking I might use a 8"x8" foil pan for it. Does that sound good? This post above makes me think I could go larger.

And it must be perspective but that pan looks more like an 11"x8" pan. Suckah' looks big!

From my understanding, 2/3" of substrate is a little less than optimal, and you should shoot for 1"... so I probably should have used 2 cakes per casing, but I wanted to make two, and I only had 2 cakes left.. so, yeah.

So 1" is what you should judge by? Alright then.

Anything less then an inch is too thin. You should shoot for 1 1/2-1 3/4 inches actually. Up to 2 inches works well but not over.

What kind of hit should I expect?

I still think I'm going to get more yield per cake with the 1-cake casings than I would with open-air casings. Think thats true?

I think it's true. Though your mushrooms won't be near the size that they would be had you used a thicker substrate layer.

I think with my WBS casings, I'll use a very thin bottom layer, maybe 1/4", 1.25" of substrate and 3/4" ontop.. or something like that.
