A question on Psilocybe semilanceata.
    #3302247 - 10/31/04 09:23 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I've been finding these Liberty Caps yet today I noticed how on some of them, although the stems are identical and the caps have the same colorings and appearance, on certain ones the gills appear to be lighter in color, although still the same purply color, just lighter than some of the other ones.

Also some of the caps slightly, not drasticaly but slightly spread out more on the margins and aren't quite as perfectly "Liberty Bell" shapped.

Also one mushroom out of those I found today had a lighter stem, flared out a little more at the margins than usual, and had lighter appearing gills. Also the stem on this one seemed much more rounder and thicker than the others yet soft, as if made of compact stringlike fibers. A lot of the others have pretty small caps, yet are still fairly long and light brown brownish to strawlike stems.

I'm just starting to get confused as to the possibilities here. I already have a high level of doubt about most anything that would deal in matters that could prove dangerous if not careful.

Just wondering about how much they might differentiate in looks from one another, is it natural for some to turn out with lighter spores/gills. etc.?

I've had a similar experience, alot of the time i've found that the gills go lighter after they have dropped their spores, in any case though wait a few days for them to dry out and you will notice that the gills with turn to a very dark brown color and the stem and cap should be a lighter shade of brown.

Here are some sporeprints I've taken. Some of these appear to be  a little darker.... Any input from someone?

Is it normal to have darker sporeprints like that?
As you can see all the mushrooms are yeilding the same color of spores.

Pictures of the other liberty caps that have been found are  in my previous posts. I didn't want to repost anything and definately don't mean to annoy or irritate anybody. Just in case

They 've all been drying for a little while so now the picture is pretty crumby. I was pretty sure that new pictures wouldn't do much good.

These are newer mushrooms, that I gathered yesterday, and got those spore prints from
.
Even though they are already drying a lot.

They look fine to me..Libs do vary in so much as they start quite bullet shaped, and can flare out more like a witches hat shape with age..

but they look the deal to me.

Another question I have would be how long, if they've been left out in the open to dry until they lose their potency? That color of spore print is good right? As far as I understand myself so far, it is. Yes I know what color it's supposed to turn up, I just want to make sure I'm seeing them correctly myself.

Liberty caps will retain their strong potency for a long long time. You can leave them out for several days, (possibly even weeks) with little or no loss of potency, but for long term storage, put them in an air tight container in a cool dark place.

I have personally experienced libertys which were about 3 years old, and still potent.

I think the darker ones are just a sign of more spores. The spores are thicker (more numerous) from some caps, than in others.

Yeah, yesterday I had seperated the stems from the caps for some reason and just ate the stems and definately experienced some wonderful things.
