Just went to church
    #3301181 - 10/31/04 02:01 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

For my class on Sociology of Religion, I was supposed to visit a sectarian church, meaning one that believes it holds the only truth, as opposed to a denominational church, which believes it holds one of many truths. I decided to visit a Pentecostal church nearby. This is the kind of church where people get possessed by the Holy Spirit and start shaking and speaking in tongues, so I'm sure you can imagine some of the crazy shit I saw. The preacher reminded me a bit of Cartman in the episode where he starts his own church, with all his exclamations of "Praise Jesus!" and "Hallelujah!"

What's interesting is that for a church that took the Bible literally, there were very few references to it. There was one reading from 1 Corinthians, which basically talked about how great things will come to you if you love the Lord. He kept talking about the wonderful things that will come if you believe in God, like he was trying to sell me something(which, of course, he was). He had everyone bow their heads in prayer, and had us ask God to bestow upon us these great and wonderful things and make us happy.

The whole time, I'm thinking, "Why would I need God to give me things to make me happy? I'm happy now, in this moment. Sure, things could be better, but I'm happy." It seemed to me that they were all missing the point. For all their talk about worldly desires, they still seemed to be falling into the trap of looking for happiness outside of themselves.

This is an awkward discussion. See I do not fully understand what the bible says, and from what I understand so far, i believe it all. That is why Id like to learn more because it will be greatly rewarding as my life has been rewarding from what I know so far..If you just sit down and commit yourself to learn what the bible says, (just like we do with mushrooms), you WILL see what it says, and you will understand what the meaning of it all is.

the bible is a good myth as HueHue once said. wonderful stories.

ya dude.. the bible holds a lot of secrets.. Please don't equate the bible with modern day church.. although it IS a backbone.. The actual bible, when you set aside all the implications it has on today's society, and especially those of the past, you will see a clear meaning, and it IS good . But also, the same of other books. The bible is just a small piece of the whole 'enlightenment process'... It just gets a bad name :0

but their are also some very demeaning qualities to the bible.
