    #3298046 - 10/30/04 06:18 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Can wild bird seed be used to fruit cakes instead of casing them?
Thanks

Yep, but you might as well case them, they crumble very evenly and you'll get a better yeild too.

Rye works for sure and I've heard from Kramer I believe that WBS does as well. Well worth the time casing them though.

Without vermiculite mixed in the cake or a casing, you may have trouble keeping the moisture level right for good fruiting. You can get fruits, but your yield will probably be greatly reduced.

** edit ** I have substituted ground Wild Bird Seed for Brown Rice flour in PF cakes with no casing and very good results.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Trying this now (because i have too many 100% colonized jars lying around... and I want to see if it will work. Ill have pics to show soon. Right now its just a WBS 1 pint cake sitting in a terrarium... not cased... nothing added... nothing interesting. Im trying this with Mex. Stroph. if anyone was interested. Hopefully I will have good results!

Ooh, duh. I made a WBS cake... but I forgot to mix vermiculite with it. :frown: So, it's just.. a WBS cake. Well, I was going to case it, but I wanted to see how it would work.

I'll make sure and keep it as moist as possible.

At 10 psi I would cook them for 2 hours and never open the lid. Then cook them a second time after 24 hours.

By doing it twice you alow any endo spores time to hatch after the first PCing and you get them during the Second PCing

That way you can be sure

Whole grains are very hard to kill all the nasties at 10 psi.

I have had a 10 PSI PC once and that is how I did and I had 100% sucess.
