Gallerinas again? ID help
    #3297907 - 10/30/04 03:26 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

once again these were found in a spot in upstate, ny.  it has been somewhat warm and humid.  They were found on wood that was decaying, maybe pine or something similar...

that white stuff ontop of the shroom is just decay or something, not spots....

These we found growing and picked some, i have no clue what species they are , they dont look active maybe edible who knows...

these were found growing on a log, they were really interesting, the caps almost felt as if they were growing velvet cool huh?

we are doing some spore prints and trying to come to a closer conclusion right now  :stoned:

does anyone know like an interactive website that will help you identify mushrooms? we dont have a book!

The warts aren't what classifies an amanita as an amanita.
It's got white gills (so far), veil (most have), and most importantly the universal veil leaving behind a vulva at the base. Looks like an amanita to me too.

Peace

A good place to start would be to get a spore print on white paper.

The two photos above that seem to show a volva don't clearly show the base of the stem. A photo that shows the entire base of the stem would be of help here, too. If you didn't already, make sure you get the entire base of the stem by digging into the soil a bit. Some Amanitas have stems that extend down in to the soil several inches like a taproot.

Try to get photos of the mushrooms at several stages of development. It's very useful to see everything from buttons to mature specimens. We don't need to see specimens that are old and rotting.

The only good way to determine if a mushroom is edible or poisonous is to identify it to species.

The white capped mushroom seems to have an interesting (scurfy) stem. That, plus the gill color, suggests to me that they may be Hebelomas. Do the gills of fresh specimens have tiny droplets of water on the edge?

The felty capped polypore suggests one of the species of Inonotus.

Happy mushrooming!

well we cannot get them at several stages of their development, considering that we found them growing naturally. Also they do have a large "root" type thing that was extending into the earth, which we thought was very unusual, (we hadnt seen that before) in any case, we probably wont do much with them..
they could possible be Amanita phalloides (Death caps) soooo.

Actually, it's normal to find that mushrooms of a species are in various stages of development. It's more unusual to find that all of them are at the same point.

If they had a deeply rooting stem then they very probably weren't Amanita phalloides.

For future reference, the only way to be sure of identifying a mushroom is to pick some and bring them home with you.

Happy mushrooming!
