Collecting ethics
    #3297856 - 10/30/04 05:10 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hi all; first post here...

Reading through other posts I see a lot about not stealing mulch/mycelium from patches outside... makes sense of course but I'm wondering if there's any ethical way that most agree on to take out samples as starters. I mean of any species of mushroom, in general.

Say I'm at a place (where picking up material isn't illegal of course) and find a patch of a species I'd like to grow at home. Say I want to start with some wild mycelium in this case instead of cloning or sporing, but not cross the line into raping the bed.

Take only a few ounces of colonized substrate, refilling the spot with fresh material?

I did try to search archives of the whole site, sorry if it's already been discussed. Can't come up with the right keywords if it's there.

Reason I ask about all species in general is that I'm in the process of converting my backyard to native life as much as possible, including fungi.

Keep in mind that taking a bit of the mycelium and trying to grow it elsewhere is cloning. Starting your clone from a mushroom or a thallus (the underground part of the fungus) doesn't alter things, as far as the result at the clone end. At the other end, the mushroom is a fruiting body, made in such a way that its destruction doesn't harm the thallus. Taking part of the thallus is much more likely to cause a problem.

A better forum for this discussion would probably be one of the Cultivation Forums. The main foci for this forum are finding wild mushrooms and identifying them.

Happy mushrooming!

Gotcha. What I really meant was avoiding sterile and 'surgical' cloning- should have been more clear. The question is really more about hunting ethics. Thanks for the reply.

This would be both ethically, ecologically and mycologically highly acceptable.
