Yes. you read the topic right.
Went to Paul Stamets lecture tonight.
He said next time you have got a couple flushes of oyster mushrooms, change your cars oil, break open the straw, pour in the motor oil, and clump it back together. Get ready for some of the biggest oysters you will ever see.
Ok.. as for edibility (of course someone asked), they did tests, and said that they were still edible.
I personally wouldn't eat them.... I'd do it for fun.

Could He have learned this experimenting with biological methods of controling oil spillage?
Sounds interesting.
What else did he talk about come on give us the scoop please?

He was talking about myco-remedioation of soil contaminated by fuel.
Oyster mushroom mycelium absorbs the oils, turns black a few days, then starts breaking it down into simpler forms. Since its made of hydroocarbons and stuff, the mycelium breaks it down into carbons and hydrogens.
He has a new book that will be out in June or July on it.
He is also working for bioshield (government) on species of mycelium that can destroy biological weapons.
Also alot of research on chemicals in mushrooms to help stop small pox, and HIV.
and so much other stuff.
the man is a genious.

Stamets is coming out with a new book?
He's due for one. That makes approximately 1 book every 10-11 years.
I wonder if this works with vegetable oil.
Does it totally digest the motor oil into something that can be disposed of?

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...nce&s=books Mycelium Running: A Guide to Healing the Planet Through Gardening by Paul Stamets A groundbreaking manual for saving the world through mushroom cultivation! The science goes like this: fine filaments of living cells called mycelium, the fruit of which are mushrooms, already cover large areas of land around the world. As the mycelium grows, it silently breaks down plant and animal debris, recycling carbon, nitrogen and other essential elements in the creation of new soil. Read all about the newest trend in environmental science in Mycelium Running. book Description: More mushrooms, less pollution! Yes, you heard right: growing more mushrooms may be the best thing we can do to save the environment and mushroom expert Paul Stamets explains how in MYCELIUM RUNNING, a groundbreaking manual for saving the world through mushroom cultivation. The science goes like this: fine filaments of cells called mycelium, the fruit of which are mushrooms, already cover large areas of land around the world. As the mycelium grows, it breaks down plant and animal debris, recycling carbon, nitrogen, and other essential elements in the creation of rich new soil. What Stamets has discovered is that the enzymes and acids that mycelium produces to decompose this debris are superb at breaking apart hydrocarbons?the base structure common to many pollutants. So, for instance, when diesel oil?contaminated soil is inoculated with strains of oyster mycelia, the soil loses its toxicity in just eight weeks. The science is both simple and brilliant, and in MYCELIUM RUNNING, Stamets discusses the various branches of this exciting new technology, including mycorestoration (biotransforming stripped land), mycofiltration (creating habitat buffers), myco-remediation (healing chemically harmed environments), and mycoforestry (creating truly sustainable forests). Also featuring instruction in the fine art of mushroom cultivation and tips for choosing the appropriate species of fungi for various purposes, MYCELIUM RUNNING is the consummate guide to this newest trend in environmental science.

I wonder if using discarded oil from restaurant deep fryers would work as well as motor oil? It might be a little more palatable.
