I am not 100% but judging from those spongy gills it appears to be from the family of Boletes.

That resembles Boletinellus meruloides. What kind of trees were they growing near?

Happy mushrooming!

Your fruit resembles characteristics
of a polypore. Did you find it
growing off wood or at the base of
a tree (off the root system)? It
looks like polypores I have found
growing from conifer wood.

I am almost positive your find is
NOT a bolete. Check out the following
link for more info: MushroomExpert.com

From Mushroomexpert.com:

The Polyporales form a large group of diverse mushrooms. Most of these are "polypores" in the widely used sense of the word: they are wood decomposers whose spores are held in tubes (rather like the tubes of the boletes). Many lack fully developed stems, and grow shelf-like or crust-like on wood, while some have more or less central stems and grow at the bases of trees, and a few appear to actually grow terrestrially.

Good luck hunting.

Namaste,

Peaceful Nomad

They were growing near the base of a disiduous tree (leaves fall off, do not know what kind though).

The tree was on an incline and they were only growing on the inclined part of the hill, not at the top.

They were in a grassy area next to the road and were difficult to pick because the stalk was off center and very short.

Sounds like you found the fruit in
an area (side of a hill) prone to
occasional erosion. This may leave
roots temporarily exposed and open
to live rot. You may have harvested
the pictured specimen from a decaying
root system.
