I wonder what it would be like, if every book on the word of God/Allah/Ra/Jehovah/Jah/ etc.  were put into one massive pile and burned and we had only our hearts as means of obtaining comfort and answers and guidance.

A lot of people confuse their selfishness with what their heart is informing them to do. A lot of people confuse their selfishness with what God/Allah/Ra/Jehovah/Jah/ etc. wants them to do. I doubt anything would be different in the world if we organized the bonfire you're suggesting.

Someone would do something quite simple and absurd. A person would relate a dream they had the night before they had a stroke of good luck. The very next day that person would begin wearing a funny hat and claim to be in direct contact with the invisible power that provided that luck.

Gradually that person would gain a following. There would be many critics, but there would also be many followers. As the group gained a foothold they would be able to point to tangible success due mainly to the fact that unity is stronger than individual action in general. Success breeds success. You follow the group and make a strong contribution-you get to wear a hat..a smaller hat, but a hat nontheless.

A good religion follows the rules of a good business. And those who are ready to turn their minds off in exchange for security always outnumber their brethren.

Destroying the books would make very little difference. There might be less killing initially until the new priestcraft discovered new demons to rally their followers against. Then the whole bloody pageant would start all over again..

Until enough people understand that God is within there will always be a market for Godware.

You are viewing these books in the wrong light. These are not books about different gods, they are books about different paths to one god. Its whether or not such a god could exist that we should be wondering.

And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust." And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus.

How I view these books is irrelevant considering that we were asked to pretend they did not exist as a pre-condition to entering this discussion.

If you want to introduce another thread along the lines you mentioned..I would join it, but I doubt there will be much disagreement between us. No spark, no fire.

But destroying these books alone wouldn't bring in a "reign of pure love only". Jellric did a wonderful job demonstrating how this is bound to happen, more genuine effort would need to occur before a utopia was born (a lot more )

If the first post was meant in a literal fashion (I suspect it is more of an analogy myself ), burning books, no matter which ones, is an ignorant thing to do.

Yes, I think it was an analogy, I assume jiggy was expressing one aspect of the path to utopia, which I am all for

Most people can't deal with it. They can not put their trust in humans and attribute many deaths and unhappyness to humans. They need to blame someone else, a creation of their mind who they have learned to believe.

You all rock the house. This was interesting to read through so many perspectives on this.

And yes, the books don't have to be literally burned, because they would be recreated as Jelleric said.

I think I was feeling a deep sense of wondering the difference between sourcing stregnth, answers and  comfort in something out there which depends on a fearing an evil enemy, versus sourcing it from your own heart and that of others which doesn't depend on fear but actually eases it.

Does the fear simply come into play, as the result of placing your sense of strength, security, source for answers and comfort in something out there, something you have no control over?

I think this ties into something I'm feeling about taking responcibility for the self, becoming your own source cause for these things.

Why is that so difficult for so many? Why do they need to fear punishment to do good? Is it really doing good if it's done out of fear of punishment?

Why can't doing good be motivated by it just feeling good?

Why can't comfort just come from loving the self and others?

Why can't answers come from your own inante creative intelligence?

Are these books, institutions and fears of punishment neccesary?

I remember reading something that said, if you look without you go without. Insecurity fears still develope even when you may have it all on the outside.

If you look within, beleiving its all in you, you find you have it all right there at your disposal to draw on when ever you want or need. With that, insecurity fears disolve.

I was just thinking about what swami said in the "do you enjoy life" post. That friend who hung himself had all of the requirements he listed for general happiness well being. Obviously, thats not where it comes from. I've been thinking about how this "nice gentle" guy, had not the ability to connect with others, everything was superficial in his life. It was all about stage props. It makes me think, he was able able to connect with his own self either, cut off from himself he was and his times of going into dark periods of withdrawl I think reflected that pain and fear of being isolated from his own self.

In support of what swami said there, I think if you know how to go within, then the rest appears on the outside, the jobs, health relationships financial security as a natural result and they are full of meaning, not just hollow stage props for creating appearances.

These books and the religious institutions that result from them, I think put too much emphasis on looking with out side the self for strength and comfort, and thats hwere the fear comes from.

That insecurity fear is the cause of all the shit people see around them in the world.

Maybe, that is what is driving many to start looking within for comfort, strength, and answers to make it through the day and not just make it through, but to thrive.

I'm just thinking out loud.

Thanks for jumping in with your out loud thoughts on this.

Someone already thought that one out I am afraid:

" Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one."

"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda
