swim was wondering what would happen if she mixes an amount of Syrian rue seeds(ground) into a substrate. would the harmaline alkaloids be carried into the mushroom as it grows?

I would think definitely from the seeds if they were ground. Wouldn't the mycelium consume the seeds and the alkaloids?

if this is true then wouldn't the mushroom be able to absorb any alkaloids that are mixed in with the substrate?
is there a simple field test for harmala alkaloids?

Mushrooms can absorb many things. That's why you're advised to not eat mushrooms growing from soil which contain harmful chemicals for whatever reason. I've even seen them use mycelium to help leech pollution from the ground.

No ones ever really tested the absorbtion of things. If you can test it, try it and let us know! Everything existing is mostly speculation at this point on whether certain things in the substrate will be absorbed into the mushrooms and kept in a form that will affect you in the same way. Advanced cult might be a better place to ask. They always love debating whether this chemical or that one in the substrate would do anything or not

I tried Syrian Rue seeds ground up and added to PF cakes (in addition to BRF, not as a substitute). For some reason I never got any growth from those cakes. This was when I was first starting in this hobby so you may have a better chance of success if your technique is better than mine was. Just don't do all of your cakes that way or you may be in for a very big disappointment.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Also, I would suggest sending off atleast one mushroom (if they grow) to one of those free scientific testing places. You definately won't get back your mushroom, but I believe they will provide a report of all chemicals that were found in it.

Unless you have a way to test for the harmaline alkaloids yourself. (I'm not too good with that stuff).
