My friend wants try a little something with a jar that's...
    #3293100 - 10/29/04 11:06 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

...going down the wrong path. ***First of all he's well aware, from reading at this great board, that contamed jars are a no go. But this situation looks like one where someting can be salvaged. Maybe, maybe not!

This is a B+ jar with a nice sized pure white patch of mycellium on one side. It looks very healthy. However on the other side of the jar, not in contact with the healthy myc at all, there is an area of gooey verm/BRFverm mix right up near the jar band. Obviously if the jar is let go longer and those two meet, the jar is gone.

So here it is... Can my buddy release the cake and harvest that great looking mycellium into a casing tek for further growth??

Thanks guys and gals and keep up the great board.

I'm only a noob, but it doesnt sound like a good idea to me. You would have a very high risk of contamming the casing, and even if it didnt get contammed, your not going to have much substrate with a fraction of a jar, but thats depending on the jar size. I'm assuming your using a 1/2 pint.

In my opinion, if its contammed, especially a 1/2 pint PF jar, your going to be better off just getting rid of it.

I'm only a noob, so you might want to hear the opinion of some of the experienced growers, but thats just what I think.

IMO, it's worth a try. Case it into a coffee mug or something.

Just keep it away from your other stuff.

OR..... take it out. Cut all the uncolonized portion off. Break into little pieces in a ziplock baggie and spawn to a small tray or straw or somthing.. *shrug*

If you dont have any more spores or something to start new jars or spawn, its worth trying. You'll be able to tell if it contams, but I prolly wouldnt case it w/ healthy cakes.

Well thanks for the input guys and gals...

I think my buddy was up to the challenge whether anything came of it or not. He's got more spores, but he's also really interested in learning so he cased the shit out of that bit of mycellium.

If nothing else, it will have been a nice practice run for future casing adventures.

Ive done many salvage jobs from grain jars. I used to just break off the
contams with a sterile spoon for outdoor spawn. Now that i need to keep it indoors i pour in a 1:1 H2H/water solution in the jar. This will wet down and kill the spores. Let it sit for a 1 min, some fizing will occur. Then dump out the peroxide and cut out the good chunk with a clean spoon. Then i pour the peroxide over the chunk and that can be used as spawn or a micro casing in a cup. You can also dunk the loose grains and smaller chunks into a bowl of dilluted peroxide and scoop them out for spawn use.

Wow, my buddy who did the casing experiment has some pretty tremendous mycellium breaking through the case layer. At least he thinks it's mycellium. It's fluffy and white and coming up from below. Based on his studies so far it doesn't look like contam! So he's pretty damned excited.

**One thing though... It does seem quite fluffy and that may be standard for myc that's establishing itself within the case layer. He's been looking on this sight at pics to compare what he's got with other's pics.

Do you think this is normal myc growth?

Will the fluffy stuff thicken up when he births the casing?

Is there any need for him to cold shock (put in the fridge for a night) the case to get it to pin?

Well whatever the hell it is, it is pure white and growing happily, popping up in roughly the same pattern he crumbled the cake in.

Veterans please illuminate us on the fluffiness of the growth.

Thanks much, OH

Pure white is mycelium.

I tried to case a couple of contammed cake pieces, but the myc didn't grow at all.. So I would say that if it is growing, he very well could be successful.

Here's what one of my casings looked like after 3 days+patch+1 day in the incubator.

The mycelium spots are circled in red.
