I think i found troufles!!!
    #3292612 - 10/29/04 05:09 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

when i was out at my dads property i was taking pictures of various mushrooms and saw these. didnt think much of them they jsut looked liek some messed up fungi. but i have been looking at trouffles and i think its what they are!!!

i didnt pull any and the pic turned out shitty. ill get more this weekend hopefully.

it was growing underneath a really rotten log that was avove ground (birch or maple). they were in the ground under a bunch of leaves and forest debris. they were quite hard and white. sorta bally or lumpy looking.

how should i go about picking these so i dont damage teh mycelium and i get more in the future?

man im pumped i really hope htese are. there is nothing else usefull gowing there, but if i had these pricey little buggers id be a happy panda!!!!

To harvest truffles, dig into the soil and pull them up. Unless you're using a shovel and digging up lots more than just the truffle, you're not going to harm the mycelium. Keep in mind that their reproduction requires that they be dug up and eaten by an animal.

To identify them requires that you pick some. Also, cut one in half and show us a detailed view of the cross section.

There are a bunch of genera of false truffles. Although none of them are poisonous, the false truffles are pretty much inedible.

My experience has been that the most common truffle-like fungi found are false truffles from the genus Rhizopogon. There are true truffles to be found in the US, so anything is possible.

Happy mushrooming.

its not truffle season. if they are, leave them until spring.

truffles are tasteless until spring.

oh ok thanks. ill just pick one for id sake. ive been readin gmore and more about them. and they sorta fit the description for habitat. it is mainly immature birch around but there are tons of cedars and firs too. i honestly cant remember what they were growing close to, or if their mycelium stretches far enough to make it non important. either way ill be there this coming week. thanks for the pointer.
